Is this standard practice to eliminate notification distractions? Is the drone not using the phones gps/data connections in any way?

For me, yes.
Data only, and that for the map. Cache it before flight (WiFi or LTE) and put the phone in Airplane mode.
The maps in the app don't come from Google.
Open the app and its map window .. scroll around the area you want to fly at the detail level you want.

How do you know when it's cached? Is there a setting to allow what and how much space is used for caching...sry I'm still new to this (anxiously awaiting my MA2 delivery)

As long as you are looking at the map it's cached just leave your app on the si is there at your spot to fly at..

Thanks very much...I gotta say, I've looked at some other brands but after realizing how valuable this forum is I decided to stick with DJI and ordered my MA2 last Sunday...thanks again!
