I thought it was from today’s date you have to register not ‘by now’ you have to have registered : /

If you mean with the CAA in the UK, then yes, today is the deadline day if you wish to fly legally. Note that if you have not registered then AFAICT it just means that you can't legally fly until you do, so if you effectively hibernate over the winter then there's no problem if you want to leave it until the spring as long as you don't forget to register before you fly.

Nil points for the government and CAA for communicating this out to the masses, BTW. Sure, it's been discussed on forums like this and by organizations such as the BMFA, but members of those groups are not really likely to be those causing the majority of problems. I've seen precisely two articles specifically on this in the mainstream media, both on the BBC and one of those was today, so how the average casual drone pilot is supposed to know they need to register I have no idea.

I'm pretty sure some FUD-flinging section of the media won't hesitate to run some article about how all of us reckless drone pilots are flouting the law once one of their reporters gets it into the heads to ask the CAA how well the registration scheme is going though, which will probably be the very next time a pilot reports a near-miss or someone flies too close to an airport.
