Any comparison of still image quality with new Air 3S vs Air 2S vs Mavic 3 classic?

Hi all, I am new to this forum and currently have an Air 2S. My interest of drones mainly lies on still photography more than filming, with the background of using APS-C and full frame camera, the quality offers from 1" sensor of Air 2S is hardly be satisfied with inferior dynamic range and sharpness especially around corners. So heavy post processing is needed in every DNGs. I accept this, after all it is a drone under 1kg rather a proper camera but I would like to know the new Air 3S or Mavic 3 Classic can provide much better still image output than the Air 2S? Any expert with experience on these drones? Thanks a lot and have nice flying day!

I have a Mavic 3 Classic and love the camera. I do a lot of photography with cameras, as well, and a lot of editing. Of the drones you mentioned, the Mavic 3 Classic wins, hands-down. I've owned an Air 2s, which did a great job, but the Mavic 3's 20MP Hasselblad micro 4/3 camera with adjustable aperture is unbeatable as far as prosumer drones go, in my opinion. I also have a Mini 4 Pro, and have experimented with the 12MP vs 48MP quad-Bayer settings with mixed results. It appears that the Air 3s is using this same technology to achieve its claimed 50MP. If photo quality is your primary concern, I would recommend the Mavic 3.

That being said, I actually fly the Mini 4 Pro a lot more than the Mavic, for its stealthiness and vertical camera capabilities, but where max quality is needed, the Mavic 3.

I would like to add my 2cents worth. The M3Classic is no doubt great for what it is. The Mavic3Pro and its 2 addittional cameras expand significantly the possibilities though. Some might say that the IQ from the other two cameras is not that good but I would argue that if one is willing to devote time and effort to processing DNG files in pursuit of perfection, a lot can be achieved with all 3 cameras on this amazing drone.

Yup,and this is one reason why I am passing up the Air 3S and will not get it.And will instead wait for the Mavic 4 or may even look at the Mavic 3 pro yet.

Sorry for making double posts as this thread was hidden few days ago when I tried to post.

Thanks for the above replies anyway. It seems some of us are not 100% optimistic about Air 3S still quality at this moment until better proof come out. Quad bayer sensor is believed better suited for video more than still and it might be the same on Air 3S.

Y'all considering a Mavic 3 purchase should wait at this point, unless you need it, the 4 is so close.

Top reason being O4, regardless of what other feature goodies they come up with.

Most likely goody feature will be the Free Panorama mode from the Air 3S.
O3 on M3 is already excellent. With my RC Pro it does everything I need it to do. The live video feed is in 1080p on the screen from up to 15km away and the latency is excellent. No doubt O4 will be better but what additional or extra feature the will it offer to a user? I only fly in VLS which is mostly no more than 500m away. I am yet to see a video drop-out or loss of control due to signal issue. So the O4 with the the upcoming M4P on its own would not be a reason to upgrade for me.

I think you meant to reply to @Droning on and on... 's post above.
I was predicting the new Free Panorama mode from the Air 3S. I don't ever see it being offered on the Mavic 3 Pro, but it is a likely inclusion on the Mavic 4.

I agree with you that OS4 is definitely not a reason alone to upgrade to a Mavic 4, especially with VLOS restrictions. Mavic 4 will obviously will come with OS4, but nothing wrong with OS3 when used with the RC Pro. Suits me just fine, too.

Yes, of course, sorry.
I am sure the M4Pro will have some enticing features to lure customers in. For existing M3P owners it might prove to be a harder sell unless some major breakthrough will be introduced. These days it is more about incremental improvenents rather than breaking new ground as the technology has already evolved to very a high level.

I completely agree. The Free Panorama already now exists on the much cheaper Air 3S on the 70mm telephoto camera, so I bought one, strictly for that benefit. Bird in the hand!

As has been said above the new Mavic 4 will likely have some new features to lure people to upgrade but I can't see how they will be able to make any major improvements in the already excellent image quality of the cameras of the Mavic 3 Pro.

One of the advantages of buying a Mavic 3 Pro now and not waiting for the Mavic 4 is that the prices have dropped. Here in Canada it is now $300 less. The new Mavic 4 is sure to be at least the same price as the Mavic 3 Pro was or more.

I am hoping that with M4 release the Free Panorama for 70mm camera will be quietly added to M3P via FW update. It should be easily doable and would make the M3P even better drone with this added feature. There will no doubt be price difference between M3P and M4P and I reckon that DJI would keep selling the M3P in higher numbers after the M4P is released if the Free Panorama was introduced to M3P.
Just my 2c worth of speculation😀

That would be great but I highly doubt they will do that as they could have done that when the Air 3S was released with that feature.

Time will tell..
A3S is quite different drone with different FM. The M4P FM might be closer to M3P FM and therefore requiring less modification. As I said previously this is purely a speculation and perhaps a secret wish on my part..

I too would love to have the Free Panorama feature on the M3Pro since currently the winter temps where I live can get down to daily lows of -17ºC or lower and the highs still below -10ºC on many days so when flying in these conditions the less I have to have my fingers exposed to the elements the better. although I mostly do manual panos, this is when I rely more on automated pano features.

Regardless, I won't be updating to the M4 no matter what features it has. I am happy with everything the M3Pro offers me.

You must have missed the key phrase in my post, "considering a Mavic 3 purchase".

Also, O4 has the advantage of more compatability with new accessories. For example if/when DJI releases that new "follow me" controller thingy that was announced with the 3S it will probably be O4 only.

You now lost me completely. Anyway, no hard feelings.

None here either.

I was simply recommending that someone considering purchasing a Mavic 3 hold off and wait for the imminent Mavic 4, Occusync 4 being one of the reasons. You advise otherwise? Buy a Mavic 3?

Your reply addressed upgrading from a 3 to a 4. Completely different analysis if you already have a 3.

I do not advise anything to anyone. I simply stated that IMHO O4 on its own is not enought reason to either wait for M4 or upgrade to M4 from M3P. I thought that was the essence of your original post that the O4 was the main reason to buy M4.
