Battery indication

Today I ran one of the batteries down to about 30% and when I put it in the charger, the first led just flashes. It's a faster flash than the "charge" blink, and it doesn't charge. Does anybody know what this means?

I'm pegging too hot.

The battery was not hot, it sat in the basement all afternoon, and a day later I plugged it in and it was fine. Go figure.

An empty battery will have its first LED (i.e. the one on the back end side) flash pretty rapidly until the 2nd enters the "chain". Normal.
