To answer the OP, I found at least with the M2, if you launch with the controller switch in S mode, it will actually be in P mode with a warning and information that the switch is in S mode, but it will fly in P mode instead. It's real easy to accidentally knock that switch to another mode and not realize it, especially if you put the RC into a bag for storage/transport.
If you get that warning but really wanted sport mode, just flick to P, then back to S.
