cable or wifi?

Has anybody noticed any significant advantages or disadvantages between using a cable to connect the mobile device to the Remote controller or using a wireless connection?
My son has a spark/I-phone 6 combo and can only use wireless, I have a Mavic Air/I-Phone 7plus and now 6th Gen I-pad both connected by cable, The spark combo seems to regularly get further without interference.
I am wondering if anybody else has experienced similar differences?

The distance you can fly is down to the radio signal linking your controller and the drone.
The connection between the viewing device and controller has no effect at all.

You cannot connect to the Mavic Air controller wirelessly in the first place.
