Controller sticks?

I've read conflicting information on this so I hope to get a definitive answer. Are the sticks removable?

They are not designed to be removed, but some people remove them from the remote controller with excessive force.

1 have 1 remote that sticks are NOT removeable (first release batch 10-28) and another remote of recent purchase that are. I've noticed that the removeable sticks are different and proprietory to right and left slots.
