Display options for rc-n1c

Loooking for some options for my son to use for his display. He is getting his first drone but does not have a cell phone. I have an old ipad he wants to use but thats going to be bulky and heavy. What are some options people use just as displays?

Look for the highest nit rating you can afford but check if that's the maximum it runs at all the time, i made the mistake recently of buying a phone with a very high nit number unfortunately like many here have found phones will automatically reduce the brightness to save the screen so basically they dim as they get hotter.

What budget do you have?

Oled and Amoled displays technically cannot sustain brightness over 600 nits for more than a few minutes, because the display burns, not to mention the heat produced to the battery and the internals without thermals designed to support the heat for more than 2-3 minutes.

Galaxy S24 ultra has peak brightness of 2600 nits - great daylight drone controller TBD

Really loved flying the Air2S with my Galaxy 22 Ultra and 1633 max nit brightness. The Galaxy 23 bumped up to 1750 (no reason to upgrade for me), but the Galaxy 24 coming out at the end of the month is listed at 2600 nits. Remains to be seen how long it would last at max brightness in the sun without overheating, but definitely interested to check this out. By comparison I see online the Iphone 15 Pro Max is 2000 nits max.

Again will be interesting to see how long they will hold that brightness in the summer without overheating. Looking at the Tripltek tablet which many have touted...

I use an 8 inch Android tablet with the RC-N1 and it's a great combination.

a 8" Tripltek is an excellent option, but it's expensive, especially compared to the price of a cheaper drone and fly more combo, 1200 nits of sustained brightness and a huge battery

there is a poster here who has been touting Eagle View tablets. The premium versions supposedly have 2600 nits of sustained brightness. I've never seen one or used on so I don't know anything about them other than the specs and price ($500). 7 inch screen

this is probably getting into the realm of "you get what you pay for". I have confidence in the Tripltek as I've been using it for 4 years. Not one single problem. And I use it as the control screen for 3 different drones. I'm curious about the Eagle View and Hugerock tablets, but I don't have $500 of curiosity while the Tripltek is working. And I remain a little skeptical about those 2600 nit tablets having screen burnout and the impact of internal components

It certainly is i have spent too long looking in the end i decided to sell the Mini 2 SE and buy a drone that you can fly with the RC controller

@timskins why not get a drone that can be flown with the RC controller below

Use the old i-pad. Get a tablet support like this one which will take a 10.5" tablet.

The DJI RC is worth the upgrade, though the touchscreen interface gets a lot of flack for its clunky performance. It's not as responsive as I would like, but overall, it is a good value and frees up your mobile device. @moldorf - assuming your son eventually gets a cell or tablet

the downsides are 'only' 700 nits of brightness and a small 5.5 inch screen. A lot of people, apparently, are ok with those downsides. I wasn't which is why I'm happy with the Tripltek

I've actually compared the two screens, side by side, on a sunny day. The Tripltek was quite visible; the RC was not. There is also the factor that the Tripltek's screen was more than twice the screen area of the RC. Both factors make a huge difference for my old eyes

I don't mind the screen size as its roughly the same as my phone so am used to it, the brightness is better than my phone and of course it doesn't dim, i used to use a shade on my old controller and it worked well so i have bought one similar to the one below to give the RC screen all the help i can

yeah...whatever works best for each person

a lot of my flights are in the high deserts and mountains of Eastern Oregon/Northern Nevada. Very bright sunny days so the Tripltek is essential

That's the M5.
It's 7 years old now and still an exceptional flying tablet.

Some good ideas here, thanks. He is trying to get in with his first drone as cheap as possible. He was going to buy a refurb mini 4k from DJI but those dried up. He has been saving for a long time so I told him to just keep saving and see what pops up. The Rc controller with the screen is what he wants but of course it costs more.

Before buying the S24 Ultra, make sure the Fly app will work on it. Sometimes new phones are not yet compatible.

Another option is the Feelworld monitors, up to 2200 Nits and cheaper to purchase.
