Hi there guys ,

I’m relatively new to the Drone scene. I have bought a DJI Neo in order to get used to it and walk in to the matter. After some time and gaining confidence flying I’ve decided to explore other DJI drones of higher class . I bumped in to an auction for a DJI Air 3 with no remote and no history on condition due to lack of controller. I done some reading and I knew that the neo controller works with the Air 3 so I took the risk and won the auction and as you’d might expect there is a problem. I have no video feed from the drone to the Fly app. Initially I thought that the camera module is gone and found one planning to replace it myself. I’m an automotive engineer and daily work on electronics so I’m up for the challenge. I have so far found and done the following.

1.Drone actually takes pictures and records video and I can successfully download it to the phone and quality is good with no glitches or anomalies.

2.Drone flies with no issues and all the telemetry is available as well as the obstacle sensors work as intended.

3. Reset the camera settings, checked the shutter speed, reset the drone default settings, updated the firmware of drone and controller, reinstalled fly app, also there’s no SD card inside.

4. Tried all the above on a different mobile phone with older iOS version with same luck.

5. Gimbal can be moved as intended with the controller

6. Opened the case and quickly checked for any water traces or visible damage to ribbon cable - ptz cable and gimbal cable.
So I’m starting to think there is a hardware issue, but still can’t find the logic when the camera records and takes pictures, however I have no idea if controller and video feed use the same antenna for the transmission and if an antenna can be the issue here, or if the motherboard can be the issue. I’d rather try and fix the issue myself than sending to DJI, I’ve been reading repairs are as much as a new drone. If anyone can give me suggestions or ideas I’d be extremely grateful. I found most of the spare parts for the drone available online so I think there’s a chance of success with this .

Thank you for the time to read this ! I hope someone can help out !

Mike

What does this mean exactly?

Its not as easy as that. Your new components will have to be serial matched..This service costs money.
Usually around $100 U.S. Plus, To have them do this you will need to give the person doing the matching remote access to your PC.
Its really up to you BUT You may end up being charged very little for the repair.. Either way get a quote from DJI before you start getting Parts OR opening the Drone.
I need a little more info BUT as of now I would say You have a faulty VTX or loose antenna.and Welcome to the Forum!

Hi Cafguy ,

Thank you for your reply. I mean that I tried other mobile device with the DJI fly.

I don’t expect it to be easy or straightforward, but I thought I might give it a go before I go to the resort of sending to DJI, don’t have any idea what’s the process when I haven’t purchased it and how much of a hassle it would be. Usually wait times and turnarounds in the UK are a pain and If I could avoid that I would.

What other info would be helpful?

Standard controller? (no built in screen) Before going nuts with stripdowns and replacement components: buy yourself a good quality OTG cable and see if you get a live feed. More often than not, this is usually the cause.
Thanks Felix for the reply . Controller is RC-N3 from the neo Fly more combo. Cable works as it should with the NEO drone and is an original DJI cable. I’m here exactly because I don’t want to start doing anything more before I try all the options. Not much info out there except here !

Do you get any on screen info when the fly app loads? The virtual buttons/attitude circle bottom left/map screen bottom right/telemetry info top and bottom borders? Is it just the live video feed missing? Or is the whole screen blank.

I have absolutely everything available, no error codes at all and I can fly the drone with no issues? Also camera records and footage can be downloaded.

That cable should work but for grins give it a try stranger things have happened.lol
Believe it or not the next thing to try is remove the SD card a restart the Drone if that solves it get a new SD card (yes it can!!) Next is firmware updates all around.

All of this I have already done, that’s what I started with

2 more things.
1. Uninstall and reinstall the app ( reinstall from DJI site only!)
2. try another device and make sure it is not the one you are using.
If none of these helps you need to start a ticket with DJI.
I know you think it will cost a bunch of money but You can chase non existent problems with money Doing it yourself and believe me when I say on the (newest DJI Drones) DJI has figured out a way to make it cost you more doing it yourself. Get a Quote before you remove any screws! if you have removed the screws your quote will be about the same as a refurbished Drone only, on Ebay would run you plus 10 percent or so.

As I’ve mentioned above I already opened the bottom case to check the ribbon cable visually. If I understand correctly what you wrote , in this case they’ll charge and arm and a leg which makes it pointless …

Check the connection between the camera and the Drone. Yep its gonna cost you.
I would say D.I.Y. depending on the actual problem would cost you around the same as getting a Drone only deal.

Ignore this , found that this is optional slot for 4g, and that the antennas are in the legs .
With ocusync, the video signal is embedded in the control signal. If the drone flies and responds reliably to stick/button input: there should be nothing amiss with the TX/RX... while you're focused on this: just for the hell of it... go to the transmission tab in the main menu and manually change the operating frequency between bands. This should give you a clear indication as to whether there's a problem with a specific transmission frequency.

When the drone boots: the video feed comes from the main camera by default. Have you tried switching to the secondary camera once the drone and controller are connected?

Does that mean that’s it’s a different way of transmission compared to the VTX ?

Done that already, switches between 2.4 , 5 and dual band but nothing changes at all, below the signal graph is a green steady line, at the very bottom there’s more options that I can’t toggle between , no idea if that’s how it should be and if they can be switched

Yes I have, switched between cameras and recorded video and took pictures successfully with both of them. That’s why it’s so strange for me, I’m trying to find the logic in all but I don’t really know the drone schematics well, only what I found online.

The next step might be to check the gimbal and video feed cable connections to make sure they're properly located and clipped into position correctly.

Just in case you ain't found it yet - here's a link to a stripdown video you might find useful - there is also a detailed video stripdown for the gimbal linked into it.
