DJI smart controller; my opinion

Mine keeps showing Firmware Update Required, won’t go Green, power down the AC, power up, and then Green.
I’m worried to travel and not be able to fly because an Update on the road will fail and ground me.

Anyone who likes the screen position for the SC, Im happy for you. But for me, it's simply in an inconvenient place.

True. That has been happening since day 1.

Try holding an SC upside down and you'll see why... doing that would require a lot of "dead area" below the sticks to allow holding it comfortably, making it much larger. Or you have to go with a foldable design, which arguably would be better but still bigger/thicker or with annoyances like having to unscrew the sticks everytime you fold it. Since one of the main arguments for the Mavic series is portability, one can see why they didn't want to make the SC too large by putting the screen on top and/or using a larger screen.

Hey, top mounted displays worked for the Phantom, and they sold millions. It was well balanced, and I liked the position, Since most of the conctroller displays telemetry playes second fiddle to your device, I say that DJI should have either put the display on top of the controller, mounted it in the center (ala P4P+ controller) or made it foldable.

I cant say how many times I have seen posts from people asking who makes a case for the M2 and smartcontroller. What a pain! The P4P+ display folded down, so it could be stowed in a normal case or bag.

Why they did not put the screen near the top boggles the mind. Would have loved to been at that design meeting where they decided it should go at the bottom. ?

Oh... and the microphone on the back where you hand goes
I was wondering if you read this.

The concept of a smart controller for the Mavic 2 was a good one. DJI had already successfully integrated a display into the Phantom 4 pro plus controller which worked very well. It had its limitations but over all I think it was a benefit to have one. As good as it was, I still preferred to use my own device versus the integrated display. Using my own device just offered me more flexibility, was larger and seemed like it booted up faster. I sold the integrated display in favor of a simple GL300F controller and never looked back.

Currently DJI offers the smart controller for the mavic 2 pro and zoom series. It was long awaited and anticipated and when it finally arrived some people were happy with it and others were not so excited. I fell into the latter group.

Without going into too much detail, the things that I liked about it were that it is integrated, you only need to carry one device with you instead of a controller and a phone, it was faster, and the display was quite well lit. Battery life is good and very few glitches (After the initial firmware problems.)

Now for what I didn't like about it. The 1st thing is I never really liked the idea of having to rely on one controller as your display and as a controller. If something happens to either the display or controller, you are down until the integrated unit gets repaired. With a phone, if the phone breaks, you could always use diffetent phone. With the normal controller, if that breaks you could just buy another controller. But with the smart controller you have to send the whole thing in for service.

A big complaint I had was the position of the display. With the phantoms, I always enjoyed the display being right out in front of me. In the Smart Controller, I don't like the display being below the controller, it's not a natural position for me. Even for my Mavic, I have a display extender that brings my phone closer to my eyes. It's also right out in front of me above the controller which is a natural position for me.

The last thing I'm going to say is that I wish they had just made the display size bigger. Everyone is complaining that it should have been at least 7" may be 8". It is being sold with their flagship consumer drone, so I think they should have just put more effort into making it a larger display to begin with. Now, everyone is waiting for the next DJI announcement hoping that this Smart Controller will be offered with a larger display, but I don't have much hope for that quite yet. DJI should have realized that most people use I pads or tablets to fly. No one is going to want to go back to a small display once they have experienced the ease of using a larger display.

Well said Rob,

My thoughts exactly, Especially the screen not positioned above controls that I would have perfered.

All the best,
Paul

I haven’t 100% made up my mind up on which I will go on this.

I really like the position of my phone on the Mavmount so I leaning towards the Crystalsky.
I already have a mount so I think I would just need the CrystalSky attachment.

The other thing is if I go on a hike or into a backwoods situation I am just going to carry the original controller, my phone and a couple batteries to stay light. I sure as hell am not going to walk around the woods with a GPC case and smart controller.

You can get a case that holds the SC and MP2 in one.

I like having my $1300 phone safe and in my pocket, but I get your point.

You can just be very minimal and fly with just your RC. All important info needed is displayed on the RC screen [emoji6]

The smart controller fits into the Fly More bag very easily if you just put the batteries in the side pouches. No big deal.

Yes, but I’m bringing my phone anyways. If just use the FC then there is not much use in taking pictures/videos.

Danger Will Robinson. Can you take a picture of how everything fits into your fly more bag? I have trouble just getting the mavic and controller in there, not to mention a smart controller. That's why most people end up tossing away the fly more bag In favor of a lowe pro or other backpack or bag.

Sometimes I get repairs from people with everything crammed into a fly more bag. When I open up the zipper it's like a Jack in the Box popping out. I'm just curious. No offense intended.

I can get two spare batteries the controller and the aircraft in there perfectly. There is a diagram on one of the tags that came on the bag that shows how everything should go in.

Yea but those people aren't very observant...the Fly More Combo case works and the DJI Mavic 2 Protector case works. Both were available well before the Smart Controller was released.

I saw a comment asking about available ND filters recently...so, yea.

Works for you, not for me. Just got a broken controller stuffed in a Flymore case with an MP last week. Had to do a stick repair on it.

It's the same screen position as the standard controller and the DJI placement of the Crystalsky mount for all of their drones below the Phantom line. Spark? Below. Mavic Air? Below. Mavic Pro? Below. Mavic 2? Below. The Smart Controller was designed for the Mavic 2 series, why would it be anywhere else? Most Mavic/Spark users are used to the screen being below the controls.

And the Protector case? I never even once used the stock bag but the point was it can work AND the sticks are removable so pilot error.
