Drone ban is back on the table...

It's too early to say anything about this I think, I'm not from the US and from my perspective this topic is bouncing back and forth. Let's wait for a definitive decision.

looks like this amendment actually goes a lot further than the House version in that it explicitly targets Autel, and would also go after copycat partnership drones like Anzu and Cogito

there is almost no bi-partanship in the US congress, but the CCP drones act has wide bi-partisan support. Bashing China is especially attractive for these people in an election year

it's true, a lot can happen but I'd imagine some form of this ban will pass

Why do I get the feeling this legislation has less to do with the Drones being made in China, and more to do with civilian operation of drones..?
It has a lot to do with that!
The days of a recreational Drone pilot flying a Drone over 250 Grams anywhere are numbered!
These pilots will be told that to do so you must go to a FRIA. If you look at a map of FRIA's you will see that the AMA sure has a majority of them and if you are a long time RC Hobbyist You can see where this is heading.
I will at times speak badly of the AMA even tho I have been a member on and off almost my entire life. They are actually a good organization. BUT They are not free. and to fly on these AMA FRIA's you will need to be a card carrying member and pay the annual cost's for membership.
On most local AMA Flying fields you also need to be a "local" member with its own fee's and responsibilities. ( you can fly as a "guest" if you are an AMA member and you are escorted by a local member. )
I feel that it is a "grab" for money from the AMA and while one could argue that they fought for our right to keep flying our DJI's, I think they did so purely to get rules put in place that would require Drone pilots to use AMA approved FRIAS or Flying fields..My opinion and 2 Cents.

I don't make a good Nostradamus, but that seems a little extreme

but then, I spend most of my time flying drones in pretty remote areas of Oregon/Nevada/Idaho. No FRIA's to speak of where there are thousands of square miles with a population density of about 0.5 people per square mile

It sounded that way too back when the Government took our big park at the edge of town away and said "NO MORE AIRPLANES! Here. BUT we made you a place all your own and you can fly to your hearts content!".........."OH wait, you gotta be a member" here is your AMA application!
The AMA is the private organization entrusted by the FAA to manage safety in our Hobby. The FAA listens to them.
Now you might say Too heck with uncle Sam!- I got 100 acres of farmland I'll fly at home! That's Great and I wish I had the land. The thing is- Is your land insured? It won't be for long if you fly RC airplanes around it and its not insured while you are doing it without a whole bunch of stuff added to your policy.
Many counties also have rules for how far away from other properties you can be while enjoying certain activities even if that activity is being done on your property. So they kinda gotchya no matter how you try to enjoy your hobby.

Sort of...

Yes, Scott has said he will attempt to introduce an amendment to the Senate NDAA after they come back from recess. So nothing has been done yet. No need to panic. Yet. We can still make sure this doesn't happen.

We were given a copy that day he announced, and I was able to put this out explaining what it means.

I am glad someone else sees the AMA for what it is...they control ALL of the FRIAs in this area and have a "NO DRONES" policy.....the AMA is not a drone operator's friend

A blanket statement that AMA has a “No drones”policy is shortsighted and inaccurate. Our club allows them and encourages people to fly both RC planes and drones. AMA also extends insurance to drone operators. If your club does not allow drones you may need to find another club.

Many clubs don't have the space and for safety, deny Drones. The field where I fly has a place for Drones away from the fixed wing field Over close to the Helicopter pads. I am also hitting some flea markets looking for old backyard swing sets and such to plant out there. It will be a tiny FPV park kinda!

Your local chapter may allow them...but around here They don't allow them anywhere...that is a fact, not an opinion....as far as the need to "find another club".....I have looked as far as about 150 miles away, and have not found one that allows drones on their AMA fields

Maybe someone needs to point out that if the secret service spent $1,000 out of their $3,100,000,000 [$3.1Billion] budget for a dji camera drone at the Butler County Fairgrounds they could have nixed the assassination attempt in the bud and they would still have $3,100,000,999 to spend on government pork projects in their congressional districts to repay corporate sponsors for their campaign contributions.

That is a shame. Is there a reason they do not allow drones?

@Talldiver ...there isn't even anyone to ask...I know they were pretty well established before drones became a "thing" ...so they probably have a lot invested and don't want to give anything up...I don't blame them...but they have their own interests, and drones are not part of them...at least not around here

If this goes through, do Canadians get affected at all? What are the chances DJI keeps their network up for countries outside the USA?

Adding drones would not have prevented someone from being killed on that day. The Pennsylvania State Police relayed information to the Secret Service of a suspicious man with a range finder 20 - 25 minutes before the shooting started. This was a failure of the Secret Service. They even texted a photo of the suspect to the agency.

This was a management failure, not a technology failure.

according to the Pilot Institute, the Senate version of the CCP drone act would not only ban new DJI and Autel drone models, it would also ground current drone models

Same here. The biggest most prominent NO DRONES signs in the entire county are located on at least 2 local properties and on their website. Pretty clear to me.
