Yeah, that's what I am wondering. Did the battery just come off? If so, that is a bad way to lose a drone. Yikes.

Is it possible to recover the flight records from the drone, or are these stored only on the controller?

Recovery of the memory card data shouldn’t present any problem...
Wash the card overnight in distilled water, do not use any oils or soap just a damp strong paper towel , concentrate on the gold terminals making sure they are free of any contamination.
Let the card air.dry for several days resting on a dry, absorbent paper towel once the card is completely dry then place it in a reader, it should still be operating OK
Cards are basically memory storage covered in a plastic sheet, the output is directly connected to the gold plated terminals that plug into your DRONE
So unless there is water left under the cover or contamination at the terminals all memory should be retained
The problem may be if the Drone died on hitting the water or when water reached the electronics its pot luck !
