Flying in Madeira?

Did you fly in other parts of Portugal?

Did you get those requests approved and did anyone question you whether you had approvals when you were flying your drone?

No, I was only in Madeira.

All requests I made were approved, no problem. The AAN approvals were received about 7-9days before the planned flights. The maritime approvals came within 24 hours after sending the request by email (I sent the request right after the AAN approval).

I didn't see any officials when I was flying the drone. Nobody questioned.

In Portugal now. I submitted about 20 different locations, including many in Madeira.

I wouldn't be able to fly in all these locations but I wanted the option to fly in some of the locations, depending on weather and schedule.

I had only two rejections, one was the marina area of Funchal. I forget the exact reason they rejected but it wasn't a high-priority location for me.

The other rejection, at Sao Laurencio, the Pontas extending out into the ocean in the NE part of the island, was initially rejected because I chose the wrong jurisdiction. Actually if you look at the map, it's very close to the airport so some parts of the peninsula is definitely NFZ or need specific approvals from air traffic control

So I resubmitted that one with the correct jurisdiction and it was approved though they cut the range from the 1000 meters I requested for a Circular flight zone from the GPS coordinates I submitted to 500 meters. But they didn't reduce the max altitude of 120 meters.

I did the requests only in e-AAN portal. Presumably they contacted the IFCN on the island. They didn't tell me that I would need to do so on my own.

They won't tell you that, you have to do it on your own. You need to get approval from Funchal captaincy (via mail) and IFCN (submit via Simplifica, most of them are approved automatically, but bear in mind, that some are manually checked).

I registered for a Simplifica site. The tricky thing is figuring out where the places you wanted to fly falls under their Nature 2000 Network and other Protected Areas fall into.

Found a EUNIS map where you could enter the codes to see which areas and other sites for protected areas.

But it all returned authorized so it seems to be automated pretty much.

yep, most of it is automated, yet - I ended up with some manual authorization on Porto Santo, for which I didn't have time to wait anyway, so I gave up on that and flew only outside of the IFCN's zone, where I had required authorizations (I didn't even check whether they game me one or not, for sure it wasn't there when I was on the island, but it was weekend...)
