Flying Mavic above water

Hi i have read some topics in the forum about flying the mavic above water and the necessary precautions. However, i do not really understand what is needed to be done? Does the VPS have to be turned off or only certain settings in the mavic? How does this interfere with flying above water and what are the possible consequences? Thanks in advance!
