Wondering if the aircraft disappears into the soup maybe a coupla hundred feet UP and Away, will the fog have any effect on the RTH feature ???
I figgered someone has flown in the mess like we have in NW Fla right now...... 50 ft up it would completely be out of sight. ‍♂️

I have and it came right back to me . No effect, for me at least . I did know where I was as I fly there often and knew I was above anything coming back .

Depends what aircraft, you didn't say which you have. With those that use infrared bottom height sensors it can cause issues unless they are disabled.

Even before RTH is initiated, the drone will auto ascend on its own if it detects the fog beneath it. Definitely either disable Landing Protection or the downward sensors if you know you'll be flying in fog.

Ignorant of the potential perils, about a year ago I flew my MA as a moderately dense ground fog rolled in near sunset. The ground had patchy snow, and the flights (3) were within the fog, though occasionally @150’ just above it. The lowest visibility at my launch point was probably 50 or 60 feet.

In my ignorance, I was flying with all sensors enabled. But cloaked in an undeserved cocoon of luck, the MA had no issues with the fog. It might as well have been a sunny June morning. If I were to do it again, I’d at least turn off landing protection.

I got lucky, and also got some of the most remarkable drone video I have ever taken. Actually some of the best I’ve ever seen. I’m still cutting the collection of takes into a moody and thematic video, based on the poem Ozymandias, by Shelley. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, fly safe, fly well, fly happy.

Separate and apart from the fog avoidance from a systems standpoint, fog can negatively affect your drone over time. I treat fog like rain and do not fly in it, or near it.

I similarly inadvertently flew into some fog with my Air that had rolled in quickly, but the outcome wasn't as great. No damage, but I did have to climb over several fences to retrieve it from a field some ways away. When it went into the fog, the sensors interpreted it as an obstacle, and it wouldn't move. No RTH, nothing. I was also ignorant and know how to resolve the issue now (Sport mode probably being the easiest) but the better idea is to stay away from fog from now on.
