GPS not locking? Weak GPS? For home positioning

Everytime I take off it's supposed to say "GPS locked.." for home positioning, but it's not doing it. Do i have to connect my SC to my phone for more GPS accuracy?

You do not need to connect your phone. The SC is a standalone device. Where are you using your drone and controller? If generally out in the open, you should get reasonable gps connections. If you are under a roof or flying from inside a car, that could interfere. Dense tree canopy might also interfere.

The home location is recorded by the aircraft's GPS, so nothing you do on the controller side will change anything to it.

The SC needs to be connected to the internet initially to load the correct map, unless u cached it beforehand. once the map is loaded u can turn off the internet connection. I use my iPhone hot spot for this. After the map is loaded then I turn off the hot spot & switch to airplane mode. But I have noticed that the H point disappears when the map is in satellite overlay.

That explains it, sometimes when im flying besides my house (wifi connected) it says home point recorded.

Thanks guys

It doesn't explain anything.
You don't need internet to record your home point.
The drone will record home point as soon as it gets good GPS reception with its own GPS receiver.
Nothing else makes any difference to it.

To record your home poiint, as noted the DRONE needs a good signal which is shown on the controller. But as you take off, lift straight up about 25 feet. So NOT move horizontally until the straight up lift off. It should record your home point (it actually takes a picture) and when called upon will return to that point and compare the photo with the real image and try landing very precisely.

The recording of the home point is entirely done by GPS alone.
The photo you mention is part of the Precision Landing feature and unrelated to recording the home point.

If you take off without hearing "the home point has been updated, please check on the map", I would not fly far. If you take off from the same location multiple times, I don't believe you hear the message again. Home point stays the same unless you change it.

You can also just check the DJIgo4 screen for number of GPS sats the drone has locked. I believe it sets the home point with around 8 to 9.

It's common to have a home point recorded but not hear the message.
You can confirm you have a home point by checking for the green Ready to Go (GPS) banner at the top of the screen or the distance at the bottom of the screen.
(If there's no home point, the distance shows as N/A.

Your recorded home point is lost every time you power down the Mavic.
Every time you start up, you have no home point until you get a good GPS position fix.
You can also just check the DJIgo4 screen for number of GPS sats the drone has locked. I believe it sets the home point with around 8 to 9.
Although a higher number of sats improves the chance of recording a home point, it is not the only factor.
Check for green or the distance from home as mentioned above to confirm.

Hey Meta,

On your 2nd quote of my post. I have noticed a different process. I have powered off many many times, and as long as I have not moved the drone physically, the home point just stays the same. I agree that the GPS would have to be reset, but if I just swap a battery and power back on, I still seem to have the GPS signal strength as before, that was all I was referring to, and the drone does not tell me the home point has been set, etc. It seems to set the home point immediately, and "ready to go is displayed"

I agree if your volume is turned down you won't hear it, thus I turn mine up, I just like to hear it, just one think less to worry about.
And the dead give away is the Large H near the blue circle that also allows you to know the Home point is set on the Map display.

And of course the "ready to go" I overlooked that point.

Simple enough, no home point, no flight for me. Simple to look on the screen and see that it's set.

Seems a lot of folks here don't bother to look and just take off.

What's happening is that the drone will acquire sats quicker (GPS hot fix, no need to search to find the sats) and record the home point quickly but your previous home point is not saved after powering down.

If you are interested to check this, you can cover the GPS antenna with aluminium foil to prevent it receiving GPS signals and start up the drone and later check the flight data.
The home point data will be blank, confirming that the home point is lost by powering down.

This makes sense.
If it wasn't this way, you could power up in a new location, not get a new home point because of poor GPS conditions and if you initiated RTH the drone would want to go back to the previous location.
