It’s easier than I originally thought. No fuddling with the sensors. Just launch and land. I’d ever say that launch is more awkward as it requires press and slide, which is somewhat difficult to do with one hand. Although maybe slide is not needed? I haven’t played enough.
Anyway, here is my - admittedly, very bad - video you tube video on the subject.

Did you have the sensors turned off?

Agree. You just need to be persistent with zero throttle and not fight it when you land.

Let it come to you.
Exactly!
It's almost like with the dog.
If you approach it fast, it gets scared and runs away.
But if you let it sniff you first, it gets to you fine and you can pet it all you want :)

I don’t like the idea of having it at eye level but I suppose the probability of it dipping, flipping etc and striking your eyes are pretty remote. I suppose the potential for the blades to disintegrate is minimal but I used to investigate accidents where the worst possible scenario happened

I have a mate who used to hand launch and catch until it went wrong and cut his arms very badly

I just take a large plastic lid with me for areas such as sand etc

I’ve never tried to hand launch the drone, just seems to risky, but 9 times out of 10 I’ll hand catch it during landing, less potential for prop strikes with FOD on the ground.

Safety measures are of course paramount. That said, again, my primary areas of usage feature no flat surfaces, dirty/rocky/uneven grounds and high winds, hence no help from any artificial large clean surface.

i can really only see one situation where i would hand launch and thats from a boat maybe. i just have a couple of large plastic lids that i put down and use that as my launch spot
