Hey everybody. I'm new to the forum and just wanted to introduce myself. I'm still a drone beginner but I have been flying for a couple of years now. Previously I had a Phantom 3 and I upgraded to the Mavic 2 Zoom and got my 107 certification so I can potentially get paid to do this. Are there any particular resources you guys can recommend on learning to fly and photography techniques? I'm considering getting some private instruction with one of the DroneU guys and I was wondering if anyone has either had or know anybody that has had any experience with those guys.

Welcome! Before paying for classes I would check out YouTube. There are a lot of instructional videos there to choose from. Get to know the various modes available. I like Spotlight mode to keep the camera pointed at my subject while I pull back and away. Then it is a matter of practice, practice, practice.

Are there any particular resources you guys can recommend on learning to fly and photography techniques?

Personally I would not pay for instruction to learn flight techniques. Instead I would visit one of my local flying spots and plan out a list of techniques that I would fly repetitively so that I increased my ability to fly them with precision and as Mossi pointed out above learn to use the Intelligent Flight modes.
Not to rely on the Intelligent Flight Modes entirely, but to know where and when they may be advantageous to use.

Its a matter of getting the time in behind the sticks while building confidence.


You can also write down a series of drone/camera moves that you want to execute. A shot list of sorts.

Name them like.
1. Birdseye View Slow Fly Over - Camera pointed straight down and flying over a point of interest

2. Low Pullaway - Get close to an object with camera pointed down at it and then gain altitude and move backwards while tilting camera up at a slow rate to keep point of interest in frame.

3. Zoom- Fly towards a point of interest at your chosen altitude to keep the point of interest well framed. Fly straight backwards from the point of interest without altering course. Then begin flying forward towards it without adjusting the direction while filming. Stop in relatively close proximity to the Point of Interest.

4. Orbit - Fly around an object smoothly while keeping it in frame

5. Ascending Helix - Slowly Fly around an object to orbit while ascending and moving away from it so the concentric circles become larger as you gain altitude.


Add more and practice them. Getting a Mavic does not make you a great flyer, obtaining a license does not make you a great flyer, using preprogrammed automated routines does not make you a great flyer.

Safety, preplanning flights , and having the fine motor control skills , manual dexterity, and muscle memory to execute those exact flight movements and techniques makes you a great flyer. The only way you get the last part is with lots of practice.

If you can find a partner that is enthusiastic about drones as well so that will keep you motivated to go out and find interesting and fun places to fly. The "buddy" system. Plus they make great spotters.

If I was near Kansas City we would already be flying.

I do inspections for an engineering firm so most of my photos are pretty boring, but I'll go ahead and start posting them when I get some more remarkable ones

Start a Thread in the Photo and Videos Sub section and just add the pictures to the thread . It keeps them organized and others can enjoy them. Make sure they are not the sole property of the Engineering Firm though -right
