It is more about discouraging American business from setting up shop outside the US. It is also encouragement for foreign businesses to set up shop in the US to avoid tariffs. It also bring back more reasonably tariffs since other countries charge higher tariffs on US goods more than we charge them. It also brings jobs to America. Tariffs are a bargaining chip to bring countries back to the table and do a reality check.

Big picture… the US has to refinance the national debt this June. Stock Market uncertainty drives money into Treasury Bonds which drives down the bond rate. In turn making it cheaper to refinance.
I thought we had free trade with our allies. However, it is astonishing to see the high tariffs most of our trading partners added to cars and steel, among others. Many previous administrations failed to retaliate when most of our friendly allies charged high tariffs on US-made products.
Here's a fact.
People have been complaining about "jobs going overseas". for many years.
The reason jobs "went overseas" is because manufacturing was cheaper overseas.
The reason manufacturing is cheaper overseas is because labor is cheaper and there are fewer regulations on safety, workers rights, worker eligibility, and environment concerns. This is also because the cost of living overseas was lower.
People in the states wanted cheaper prices (and still do, which is VERY important) so they didn't get too uptight about many of the jobs going overseas.
Other countries also want lower prices and rarely care about the rights, or safety, of others so they will buy from the least expensive option.
US products, especially manufacturing, is almost NEVER cheaper than another country which is why we have trade deficits.
So, to get US citizens to buy products made in the US, one (or more) of a handful of things needs to happen.
Make foreign products more expensive
Make domestic products cheaper
Make domestic products better
Make it illegal to buy product from outside of the US
Tariffs are meant to do the first one.
This will do absolutely nothing to improve the lives of Americans. More expensive items means less American spending. Less spending creates a recession and won't create jobs. It also doesn't do anything to address the real issue. More expensive products, manufactured in America, will not entice a global market. There will be less foreign currency coming into the United States. With reciprocal tariffs, and global free trade of other countries, there is no motivation for any country to do business with the United States.
With so many things other countries can do, that the United States cannot, this limits the advancement potential of the United States, especially when there are products that are superior to those that the United States produce, like DJI drones.

. Went online to order some aftermarket control sticks last night for an RC and got the this tariff notification from the manufacturer. No matter your political affiliation...you should realize these tariffs punish US consumers. And the poorer you are...the more disproportionately you are affected.

What's the real issue being addressed? A lot of ideas were tossed around in this thread, but I'm not sure anyone knows for sure.
Tariffs always hurt someone, but that's the purpose I think. They're used as tools to address a perceived imbalance or inequality.
As for who is most affected by them, that's likely up for debate.

It doesn't matter how many of these are posted or even if Americans go ahead and pay the extra money, half of this country is never going to add anything bad is happening. This is no different than the next retailer posting a notice that says "New tariffs have been implemented and therefore we will absorb the costs and we'll try to move our facilities from Norway to America by the end of the month."
The only way for any of this to come to realization is when enough pain has been applied for someone to respond appropriately. Unfortunately, that's where we are for now. When the current administration reverses the tariffs, their response will be something along the lines of tariffs have works and other countries have complied. Prime minister called me and said he has never seen anything like this and he apologizes for taking advantage of America and ripping you guys off and he not only said he would move his facilities to the US and invest in the US in the future but also immediately suspend the high tariffs his countries applies to American goods and allow us in....in other words, 0% goes to 0%. US government will save face which I don't care, just as long as innocent, hard-working victims and their families, law-abiding honest citizens get some needed relief; who cares what the excuses are given.
I think we can keep this non political by saying the real issue is runaway greed.
There is absolutely no reason, at all, that people who have over $100m in cash or assets needs to have ANY considerations that gets them more wealth (or power).
A side note that I considered this morning is that too many people in the world, whether wealthy, poor, or in the middle, seem to not find a spot in life where they're "satisfied".
Myself, if I had $100m I would do absolutely nothing to chase wealth or power. I would be satisfied to live with the knowledge that I won't have to work again, worry about having food, or a roof over my head.
But I'm unique that way.

Fortunately, there are some incredible people in the US (and around the world) who use their knowledge, resources, and excess earnings to make a positive impact. The world always needs more people like that.
And, unfortunately, so many more who will screw over 100 people just for another dollar on top of their pile.
That particular example may be fake as it claims a 16% import tax has been imposed on Norway. The source I've found shows the tariff on Norway is actually 15%.

However, the point of that notice is otherwise totally accurate. The price you pay to Norway hasn't changed. The item still costs exactly the same as before.
But, U.S. Customs will demand an extra 15% from YOU, the importer, to cover the cost of the new tariff. That's how tariffs work.
The tariff money collected from YOU goes into the U.S. Treasury, thereby Making America Great Again.
The new tariffs are, in other words, the largest new sales tax ever imposed on American consumers.
This was a notice to customers (or end users) and there's no way for the customer to prove or disprove that somebody paid 15%/16% to receive in those goods before they were sold to the end customer. If the customer never pays a penny more, to them this tariff notice was likely fake and being used to send a political message or increase prices. Certainly there are manufacturers who will increase their prices but are *not* subject to the tariffs. Honestly, they would be remiss if they *didnt* and especially if the true tariff is really high. If I make items in America and my competitor (we have the same prices) just got hit with a 15% tariff passed on to the customer, I would raise my prices by 10%. If I disagree with the US government, I would tell my end-customers that tariffs are about to impact me greatly (even if they aren't) and we'll see what we can do to spare you the pain.
We actually don't know how these tariffs affect actual cost. As I mentioned in other threads, increase prices don't just go away and if the manufacturer has to make changes, his overall costs may increase. Not sure how this guys plans to manage it but the higher the tariff, the more likely it has to be dealt with effectively. But you are correct, the consumers are paying the government and that's a tax. However, when these tariffs go super high and nobody buys, the tax receipts are smaller. And absolutely for sure the poor and unfortunate and the disadvantaged and the marginalized and the less educated are hit the hardest because they have less control, less options, less choices.
Personally for the remainder of 2025, I have decided to freeze *all* big ticket spending and I have suspended medium ticket spending to must have's. I'm going to do my part, not out of protest, but because I have no idea where this is all going, I don't know what good/bad is going to happen, and the risks are too high when the alternative is to just wait and see. I'm going to sit this one out.
