Howdy from San Dawg

Greetings from Birmingham Alabama USA, welcome to the forum!

Hello from the Crossroads of America TeamGomez

Nice to meet you John. 🤝

If you haven't done it yet, swing by the FAA and register the Aircraft.

Supplementing a photography biz with drone footage showcasing automobiles.

You will need a Part 107 certificate to have the benefits of a drone footage for a business to be on the up and up.

Also, you should take the TRUST test and keep a copy with you when you fly.

Good luck and welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Thanks, Gents, for the warm welcome. I did some homework and got the TRUST stamp/registered the drone and in the process of prep for the Part 107 (don't want to upset the FAA and get my ATP jeopardized...but I'm over two years from last check ride due to a medical so I guess I'll have to jump thru the hoops). I did read a great thread here on fee waiver for certain buckets of folks so at least I might save some beer fridge dollars.

Appreciate all the links and I'll be sure to read and heed. Off to watch the Phillies stomp on the Astros again!

Welcome to Mavic Pilots! :) Enjoy the forum!Thumbswayup

Greetings TeamGomez, welcome to the forum from the outback of Australia.

Gagey52- appreciate the nod from down under. I must admit, y'all taught me how to treat visitors when I disembarked from a large grey vessel with airplanes on the roof mid 90's. Sad to admit that I've never been treated better as a US service member and can't tell you how much us Yanks appreciate it. Hope the tradition remains strong for our kids these days. God Bless.

Got a new Air2S and trying to get my head around log processing in FCP. Supplementing a photography biz with drone footage

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. We have a Member's Map in the Upper Right of the Title Bar. Click on "Members" and then Click on "Member's Map…" Check it out and you might find some new flying friends.

As a New Drone Pilot, there are a couple of Legal Things you may need to do…

If you have not already done so, you will need to get your TRUST Certificate. You can get that at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…) Your Drone weighs more than 250-grams (0.55 pounds) and if you are flying under The Exception for Recreational Flyers, you are still required to register your Drone.

I registered my Mini 2 because the TRUST Certificate and FAA Registration established me as a "certified" Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Flyer.

Link to the TRUST Certificate at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…)

Link to the FAADroneZone (Optional Registration for Drones under 250-Grams…)

Since you are planning on "supplementing a photography biz", you are required to get your Part 107 License, here is a link to get you going…

Since you live in California, there are specific laws and rules for you to follow, please check the link below for all the Rules and Laws that are in effect in your neck of the woods and it also links you to some of the Best Places to Fly in your area… Also, if you travel on vacation, visit friends, and relatives in other parts of the country, check back here so you do not run afoul of the law.

Even if you have flown Drones before, here is some Good Old Fashion Advice…

Do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a kitten or puppy opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 4-5 feet (1-1/2 meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mavic Air 2s, including the User Manual.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

Happy Droning…

If you are referring to a FREE Part 107 Exam being administered at a military base for various veterans and such, I might have written it. But it seems that in these austere times, DOD is cutting back on this and I wish you all the luck in the world to find a base offering the FAA testing.

I am a 30-year Air Force Veteran and I did a ton of research digging up the rules, regulations, and the where-for to get the FREE testing and it all seems to now be for naught…

I live within 5-miles of an Air Force Base and an Army Post. I live 15-miles from the largest navy base in the world, and 20-miles from a Coast Guard Base and not one of them is offering the Free Testing.

Two-weeks ago, I took my Part 107 Exam and I had to pay the standard $175 fee. Now, you might qualify for a Veteran's program (in one of your posts, you mention Flat-Tops and Australia, so you might be Navy) then that program would pay for the Fee for you…

Good Luck!

LT-

Thanks for the info and, yes, I was tracking your P107 threads for the exam fees. I have not yet hit the 'press to test' button locally to see what is possible but I am retired USN and a medically sidelined 737 driver. So saddling in to the video feed is as close as I get these days to making trees get small at the end of the runway. Best part is I can make the trees in my back yard get small pretty quickly now lol.

I appreciate all the info here as this drone video biz is far more technical than I thought it was. The easiest thing thus far has been the 'buy it now' button lol.
