I notice the Maps being used is MapBox or something similarly named.
Is there a work-around to allow Google Maps on the SC?

Not currently. Neither the Google Play store nor Google Play Services works on the Smart Controller. Whether or not this situation changes is unknown but probably unlikely. The SC has a limited version of the Google OS. This definitely restricts what can run on the SC including other mapping apps that need the Play Services.

Don't have the SC yet, but understand that you can "side-load" the GooglePlay store and then download apps - would this help to resolve the issue above?

I did not succeed in sideloading or other-loading the PlayStore. There are a few sites that allow downloading 3rd party apps. Some will run, others will error out due to the missing Google Play Services.
