Image transmission modes - HD is the only usable one?

Nexus 7 2013 tablet. I find that when I use Regular I get artifacts on the screen and sometimes it'll also just go black. Smooth does the exact same thing. HD however produces a perfectly clear and smooth image.

Any logic behind this?

I understood that if you use the HD feed you can only record at 1080p on the Mavic SD card.
I sometimes use the Nexus 7 which I bought for earlier Phantom 3, it is only just fast enough but works much better if you turn off the onboard cache (recording to device)
