In DJI GO 4, what does the "Centering Gimbal" option do?

I'm referring to the option in the Gimbal page's Advanced Settings page.

Choosing it makes the gimbal do its little dance, but what's it REALLY doing under the hood? I've seen different -- and conflicting -- details on this.
