iPad Mini 4 WiFi + Cellular

I purchased a WiFi only iPad mini 4 to use with my Mavic Pro Platinum. I then read about no gps with WiFi only mini 4. I returned WiFi only and purchased a WiFi + Cellular . My question is (I searched everywhere first) can I still use WiFi connection and have access to the gps or does the gps hardware only work with Cellular?

The GPS hardware always works on its own. Unrelated to any connection.

Your Mavic has a perfectly good GPS receiver that it uses for all flight functions.
There are only two features that can use the GPS in your iPad.
These are Follow-me flight and resetting the home point to the current location of the controller (sometimes used if you fly from a moving car or boat).
Apart from those, there is nothing else the Mavic will use the iPad's GPS for.
