With this DJI ban lurking in the shadows, with very little, and ever changing information about it... Is it a bad decision to spend the money on a DJI drone right now? I was looking at the Mini 4 Pro, but worry that it'll be n OK thing but a paperweight in short order. How are the rest of you approaching new drone purchases?

(IMHO) If you're planning on buying a DJI drone, buying now is important as most likely if a ban is placed it would be on any new imports

You should be fine buying the Mini 4 Pro; nothing bad is going to happen to it if all you intend to do is fly for fun. I wouldn't buy a dozen for my commercial business fleet right now but a recreational flyer won't have any immediate issues. However, every day you wait, that answer might start to change. ;)

What about any of tje larger drones. I also flirted with the idea of the Avata2?

The current legislation that passed the house, and the separate and substantially different Senate bill do not "ban" or otherwise ground existing DJI drones in the US. So buy whatever you like, it will be fine.

If the House bill were to become law, DJI would not be able to get FCC and other agency approval for new models and products.

As stated here and numerous areas on this forum, the ban is for government funded entities ONLY. Unless you are being funded by Uncle Sam, you are free to buy whatever you want.

The legislation would also prohibit certification of future DJI products, effectively banning them for everyone.

Also note that they have proposed an amendment to the Senate version which would put the language back in that version.

Sure. But also..
Many times it been suggested that DJI products will be grounded to to FCC restrictions. So..? What's really up? And when will we know it's safe to get back in the water? I just recently got into drones. And eight out the gate I find out there some crazy controversy.

Read the bill.

Baseless speculation that is not to be found anywhere in any version of the legislation.

thats the first time i have seen that in black and white so we are good to fly great

No they won't.

Nothing in any of the language suggests that if (that's a very important little word) the anit-China legislation goes through as written will make the FCC revoke current DJI licenses.

Could they? Sure. But it would take some finagling of the language to give them permission to do that. And even politicians and bureaucrats aren't that stupid.

There are SO many incorrect outlets of information out there concerning this. Please make sure you trust the source.

If you really want to know what going on, we have a number of articles on our newsroom page. They are updated as necessary.

Buy it, fly it, enjoy it.

Nothing is going to take anyone's drone away. Even Congress.

I think ANY DJI product for sale now will continue to be legal here. After a ban is passed Any Drone after that will not get its FCC cert SO buy all the Mini 4's you want and cross your fingers for the other models to hit the stores as fast as possible.

Our gooberment has once again lost it's mind, or maybe better said still can't harness a rational thought. I for one am doing nothing until this all shakes out. No new drone, no part 107, no placing bets on the outcome. There is no other drone manufacturer that can touch the video quality of my M3 Classic and that is what flying is to me, the capture of quality video at a price I can afford. So far three representatives have put my hobby in jeopardy. There are a lot more representatives that could at any time join the band wagon and toss in their heroic attempt to save America from the evil spying China. They have created a problem that doesn't exist (per usual) and it may become "in the political vogue" to become part of the new crusade. I'll continue to watch as the herd wonders aimlessly through the desert.

This is not a question that can be answered right now with any amount of certainty - by anyone

Yes it can if we exclude speculation about legislation that hasn't been written, discussed in any committee, or blathered about in any serious way by pols.

With that stipulation, I can confidently say that any DJI drone already certified by the FAA and FCC prior to the current proposed legislation becoming law will continue to operate as normal, and you will continue to be able to legally fly it.

Given the same stipulation in paragraph 1, I can also unequivocally state we will not be spending $2 million constructing a memorial on the moon to the computer HAL from the book, 2001 A Space Oddysey.

There are many more things that I'm certain won't be happening due to the above stipulation. Shall I begin listing them? 🤣
