Landed then drifted?

Hi, I tried to land my DJI Mini 4K on the table today, which I have done so several times, but upon touchdown the propellers didn’t stop and it drifted off the table. Was there something I could have done here (apart from not landing on a table) to prevent this?

Wind , that is a very light drone and without direct input is going to move with the wind more than most.
Its not as bad as if you flying it directly forward but just coming down like that its a feather .

WIND and That shiny glass surface doesnt help either put something non reflective on the top.

Not sure it's wind look at the plants next to the table and trees in the background they are not moving

Agree with Cafguy, a shinny surface probably confuses the downward sensor. Sorry I’m old fashioned, I always use a folding landing pad, 1. To provide a clear source for the downward sensor to pickup on and 2. To prevent any dirt from being blown up from the ground and being sucked into the very precise motors

I have been taking off and landing on my car roof since the day i started flying and have never has an issue,

In all my years of flying I have never a reflection of any kind effect my drone and I have purposely tested all the drones.
Im sticking with the Wind as it only shifted a few inches .

The reason for this mishap was very likely the table surface...

This from page 18 in the user manual.

Just in the end of the landing the log shows that the VPS height disappears just before the drone tumbles over the edge of the table... this indicate that the VPS sensor no more could assist in holding the horizontal position. With this the drone would be sensitive to both possible winds & turbulence from the table surface during landing & could easily drift horizontally.

The thin plant stems and leaves in the video don't suggest any significant wind. And, besides, the drone is capable of holding its lateral position with substantially greater winds. Loss of visual positioning on the table surface seems like the more plausible explanation.

There is also wind from the Props and that likely could have contributed to the few inches that the drone moved over made much more dramatic by it falling off the table. lol

I have been telling people for a while now that if you get yourselves a flat colored landing surface and then take some opposing colored tape and make a checkered (or other) pattern on the pad, You would be surprised how it will improve landing accuracy.
Its not 100% and I cant explain why it doesnt seem to work as well with those screen printed targets that the pads come with, but it does work more often than not.

TBH i hand land 90% of the time now if there is very little wind, it took a bit of bottle the first time as you imagine you will need a trip to hospital if it goes wrong but so far i haven't had a problem, the main thing to avoid is reaching up to the drone as it descends as the censors see your hand coming and it goes back up again

Thanks everyone for the insights! I’ll definitely keep these points in mind for future flights.

I think I was a bit surprised because the drone has handled much tougher conditions without issue, so I might have built up a little too much trust in it. This was a good reminder that there’s still a lot for me to learn about flying (and landing!) these things.

There's speculation and there's experimentation. I'm still inclined to attribute the OP's landing issue to something other than wind.

DJI Neo, 19" box fan on maximum speed, flagging tape extends 12" from fan. Even the lightest DJI drone deals with a substantial wind while landing.

I remember my first and hopefully last crash i had got over confident so flew in an area where there were trees and bushes i remember thinking that tree branch looks close and then it all went pear shaped as the prop hit a small branch and it dropped into a bush below luckily only the props were damages and i learned a hard lesson that day.

probably not an issue, but your landing spot isn't giving you a lot of room for error, either.

(I don't have much stick time, but based on what I know about flying in general and computers specifically, I try to leave some wiggle room in case a sensor lies or there's a hiccup and the pilot chip super over corrects. )
