M3 only 16:9 aspect ratio for landscape? No 3:2?

The consensus has always been that coincidentally it describes both, but was named, as normal convention, for the size.
That Wikipedia article does say that the name comes from the sensor size but there is anecdotal evidence that they might not have used that name if it wasn’t a 4:3 aspect ratio. For instance it is the only sensor size larger than 1” that uses a fraction to describe the size and a 1.5” sensor for example isn’t referred to as a 3/2 sensor, possibly due to a 1.5 inch sensor not having a 3:2 aspect ratio as to avoid confusion? Who knows, a bit of a chicken before the egg kind of thing. These are just observations I’ve made nothing more. If they made a 4/3 type sensor with a 3:2 aspect ratio would they still call it 4/3 type? We may never know.

I think the point someone was trying to make is that “Four Thirds” is the proper name name for DSLR camera system with a 4/3 type sensor, 4:3 aspect ratio, and a specific interchangeable lens mount which has a flange distance that accommodates a mirror. “Micro Four Thirds” on the other hand is a specification for the same 4/3 type sensor but with a different specific lens mount that has a flange distance which is only suitable for use without a mirror. The M3 conforms to neither of these specifications since it doesn’t have interchangeable lenses and in all likelihood has a much shorter flange distance than even MFT but does have a 4/3 type sensor.
