Major Photography Fail

I set out to fly an annual snow shoe race straight up the steepest trail at our local ski area.
I get to the top, find the perfect place to launch and realize, I failed to bring the cable that connects the R/C to the Wunderphone.
I thought I'd read that you can fly the mavic via wifi, but frantically searching through the menus, 5 minutes before the race started, didn't quite work.
Am I confusing this with the Spark? Can you fly with Wifi only? I could have launched and flown VLOS with the R/C alone, but that is less than optimal if you're trying to shoot good video. Wifi would have done it. Big Fail.

You can fly the Mavic Pro via wifi...theres a little switch on the side of the AC

In that video he says the record button does not work;
I’m experiencing the same thing. Anyone know how to make recording possible? It seems I can take stills, but not video. Search is coming up with nada.
