Just my opinion but I figure I might as well register as a recreational user with the FAA. Seems just about anything you add to the mini will take it to 250 grams. Could save some aggravation in the future should i have an accident or something else happens. A good example of the add on's is the set of prop guards Way over the 250 gram mark. If I am wrong then please let me know. Thanks..

I've taken the "drone code" or whatever the UK wish to call their test but I've not paid to register the drone as I dont wish to give them £9 a year for "nothing". I don't currently have any other birds so no need to give them my cash yet.

Registration is only five bucks and last two years. I would do the same just for peace of mind. I have my registration on top of my spark, Mavic Pro and Autel Evo.

In the UK it is £9 a year so a bit more of a pointless expense. The CAA know who I am and where I live so that's enough.
I've not actually weighed it with a micro SD card in as my guess is that actually pushes it over the 250g limit though.

the weight includes the card, i am glad you got your flyer id which is free and lasts for three years i find it strange that after spending so much on your drone ,that you would quibble at getting your operator id then you are completely covered if you put the prop guards on or add something like lights to your drone ,happy flying

I don't have any intention of flying with prop guards outside nor do I currently want to add strobes to the unit. They would only tempt me to fly it at night!

funny you should say that, i just made a fixing to go on my MM, see pics it fts around the body of the drone and can be fixed to the top or the bottom, i flew with it and it did not affect the flight at all, the light unit can strobe fast ,slow, or constant on i tried it a few moments ago under the MM in the dark and on the constant mode, it lit up the ground great when its time to land FHD0005.JPGFHD0006.JPG

To register or not to register" That is the question. I decided to letter mine with my existing recreational registration number that is on all my other drones. I figured it would avoid a problem if I have a partially informed policeman, neighbor or whoever that wants to give me a hard time and thinks that all drones must be registered.

if you have other drones as i do then its a no brainer to add your reg no to the MM why wouldnt you

It's been so long since I registered, I cannot remember whether I had to actually identify that drone for the FAA or whether I was simply issued one number for whatever. Why do I think that I needed to enter information about the particular drone? I ask because I am logged into my account and I cannot find anywhere to enter information about the drone.

For 107 you do. For a long time the registration site was confusing and lured you to the 107 section. It's a lot better now.

I purchased the MM to avoid registration and testing. Not that I'm trying to avoid Big Brother...I was a registered AMA member back in the 80's and 90's, and they still have my membership # and name.

I am also going to register my Mini. I for see that I could easily roll into a Part 107 arena so I expect that I will operate as Recreational Pilot or Part 107 by choice at any particular flight. I have my Part 107 in my pocket and if my mini is registered, I hope to have answers to any or all potential questions that may be asked of me. I don't really want to be worrying about being legal while I'm flying, as that tends to take the fun out of it. When you are flying a high tech machine like the mini, you are on everyone's radar and like it or not you are leaving a detailed paper trail,, or rather a digital trail.

Registering the mini as a recreational flyer just means attaching a label with your flyer ID to the drone if you're already FAA registered with other drones. If you're a newbie, you have a choice, for now.

BTW, for anyone considering registering: there are lots of hucksters online that will charge you a ridiculous fee for their "premium document preparation services" which is neither easier nor better than registering yourself directly on the FAA site for $5.

Well, it looks like DJI really knew what they were doing by keeping the Mini under 250g. The FAA's proposed RID regs came out today and WOW do they stink! See https://s3.amazonaws.com/public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2019-28100.pdf

Set a reminder for 1/2/2020 to get online and provide your comments to the preposed rulemaking. The link and FAA docket number for comment are in the pdf above. Yuck!

Looks like flying for fun in a permitted park or land are coming to an end according to what that PDF states. What kind of BS is that? Flying in an AMA field is just bs. I rather sell my drones than to compliance with that PDF new coming rules.
