New to drones and looking to purchase my first drone--what is the difference between the mavic and the mavic 2 drones?

There are quite a number of differences actually. In general they have a similar size and shape, but after that it gets very different.

Cameras and Recording System:
12MP vs 20MP on Mavic 2 Pro and 12MPand optical zoom with Mavic 2 Zoom

Obstacle Avoidance
Much improved and more sensors on the Mavic 2 - including APAS which routes the drone around obstacles instead of just stopping the aircraft

Tracking and Flight Modes
Many improvements on Mavic 2

Flight Time
Mavic 2 gains a few extra minutes

Recording Bit Rate
Mavic 2 is able to send more video data for an improved image recording

Flight Range (not functional or reliable due to location variances)
8KM vs 7KM.(Mavic 2 has increased range)

There are a few more small items as well. Both drones are excellent - and as a first drone you can not go wrong with either one.

the cameras are different the 2 has extra sensors and a light underneath slightly better flight time per battery and has different ESCs to control the motors like the mavic pro platinum and also quieter props to reduce noise if out and out video and photo quality is not a must for you then the mavic pro platinum would be a very good purchase get the fly more package there are some great deals out there now

If its your first you may want the mp1 for half price pre owned. Then if u like hobby, sell for minimal loss and get the mp2 cheaper by then.

Dont be a sucker like me and pay msrp.

If you are a photo enthusiast the Mavic 2 Pro has a larger sensor than the Mavic 1.Better pictures in low light,contrasty lighting and more enlargeable.Stills--video I can't comment on.
