I just got my new Mini 2 yesterday. I bought it because it is now compatible with my Smart Controller.

I discovered that the Mini 2 will not link with the SC until its software is updated. I learned from a You Tube video that you must first update the Mini 2 using the controller it came with and your cellphone.

So … here's the problem: Even though my (new) cellphone is greater than Android 6 aad is a 64 bit chip, I cannot install DJI Fly. DJI Fly only works with certain phones --- mine is not on DJI's list of “good” Phones.

Here's My Question: If I use my friend's iPhone to update the new Mini 2, will I be able to use my Smart Controller for future software updates to the Mini 2.

….. Or should I just send it back and beg for a refund?

Do you have a PC (windows or Mac)? You should be able to update the Mini2 using the DJI Assistant 2 program. It doesn't list support for the Mini 2, but it supports the Mini so I can't imagine it won't work with the Mini 2.

To answer your original question, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to update the Mini2 firmware through the DJI fly app on the smart controller once you get the aircraft updated to the current software version. The problem is the original firmware did not support the SC.

I have a Mavic Air 2 with a Smart Controller and I update the aircraft firmware through the smart controller.

Did you try it or are you going by what it states on the website? I would try it if you haven't regardless of what it says on the website.
Correction ... I just uploaded Assistant 2 -Consumer Drone Edition.
It is compliant with Mini 2, but I cannot update or activate with it.

I still need to borrow friend'a iPhone to do it!

Once I do that, will I be able to do future updates, etc. with my Smart Controller?

SUCCESS!!
Thank you Maggior and all you others.
I appreciate this community very much.

Here's what I did: The Mini 2 needs Assistant 2 (Consumer Drone Series).
When you download it, it will recognize your mini 2 drone, but you will be unable to upgrade with it.
There is a HACK to get Assistant 2 (Consumer Drone Series) to offer upgrades:

This YouTube Video explains it perfectly:

Wow, seems DJI kinda screwed things up here. Apparently there is something you can do to make it work, as detailed here:

This video did the trick!
