I normally shoot in JPG and DNG mode and often use the JPGs for quick stuff. I noticed today (day four of active use) that the JPGs are noticeably smaller than the same size (roughly) files coming from the Mini2, Air2 and Air2S. The only thing I can figure is the JPG compression must be higher, which sounds like a bad thing to me. Anyone else notice this? FYI, DNG files are very similar in size to those from the other birds.

What’s the file size you are seeing?

yea something seems to wrong there. 2.5mb is very small. Even 4mb seems too small. I don’t have a Mini 3 but something seems not quite right. These are taken in the native 4:3 aspect ratio?
I switch between 16:9 and 4:3 throughout each flight, hence the averages. There's definitely something different. The pixel sizes are very similar, if not exactly the same, so the files should be the same size if all else is equal.

Well no the 16:9 images are 9 megapixel and the 4:3 are 12MP on the Mini3. The Air2s is 20MP so that’s not comparable and needs to be taken out of your equation. You would need to look at the average size of the 4:3 images from the Mini 3 to the 4:3 images from the other Mini 2 and Air2.

I believe on my Mini2 the 4:3 files size is about 6MB

I'm seeing jpgs at 4-6MB from both the Mini 2 and the Mini 3, just a quick check, did not look at aspect ratio

Jpg file size will vary depending on subject matter as well as compression level. My mini1 produces 12mpx jpgs varying between 2 and 6mb. 2mb for a scene with minimal detail (eg flat blue sky and smooth snowy fields) or 6+mb for a busy scene with lots of detailed foliage.

2.5mb seems low for an average jpg size though.

My Mini 3 pro produces in compex scenes JPG files with more then 8 MBytes.
12,2 MP - 4032 × 3024

I see you folks are making me work for it, so here you go. I just flew the Air2, Mini2, and Mini3Pro at sunrise, taking virtually the same seven shots a few minutes apart. The mini2 only takes 3 shots per AEB set while the other two are taking 5. As you can clearly see, the 3 has a smaller file size by a significant margin. All shots are 4:3 with all settings on "auto".

I never take images in jpg always Raw, but when I fly next will try Jpg only to check your findings out, many thanks for your persistence, cheers Len

@WilliamDaugherty did you ever figure this out? I came across this when using DJI SDK 5. Internally the Mini 3 Pro is using Fine Image Quality whereas the Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro use Super fine Image quality (so almost no compression). I can switch the Mini 3 Pro to use Super fine compression using the SDK which results in the file size doubling and matching the Mini 3 and Mini 4 Pro I took for the same scene. Weird that these options do not exist in DJI Fly to adjust image quality (compression)

What is the function? I don’t see that anywhere in the SDK documentation.

It's not in the docs I found it by looking at the source. E.g.

JavaScript:
// To get the current Photo Quality setting
CameraKey.KeyPhotoQuality.create().get()

// To set a Photo Quality setting
CameraKey.KeyPhotoQuality.create().set(CameraPhotoQuality.SFINE, {
    // Success handler
}, { idjiError ->
    // Failure handler
    println(idjiError.errorCode())
})
