Hi,
Just a quick question really.
I’ve been offered a Datacolor Spyder 3 elite but I’m unsure if it’s useable for my Dell ultrasharp monitor. IPs panel type.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Just try it, you have nothing to loose.
Calibrating doesn't change your monitor. It is only a color-profile placed on the monitor path.
If you don't like the results turn back to your original profile.

Install the datacolor-software, study the manual very well and go on.
Remember, good calibrating needs some expertise.

Why do do want to calibrate? Is it for making prints of your images? In that case it is well worth trying.

Succes,
Ton

Note that this isn't true if you have a higher-end monitor which supports hardware calibration (e.g. Eizo, and, for the purposes of the OP, some higher end Dell's). Though presumably, if you have a monitor that supports hardware calibration you both know it, and already have a color management system in place.
