After reading what is now in place in Switzerland, I’m even more convinced that the U.S. will be moving towards a Network based system. I’d be interested to know your thoughts?

HI Russ. Fun video as always.

A couple of things. First, the Final Rule is the Final Rule. They can't arbitrarily add network requirements w/o an additional NPRM. Even with the phrase "at this time" mentioned 31 times in the Final Rule PDF, that would be too much of a variance on the current Final Rule. As mentioned, it would likely require a new NPRM process.

Also, the needs of the Swiss airspace is immensely smaller than the needs of U.S. airspace. Switzerland has around 16,000 square miles of airspace to monitor, the U.S. has 3.5 million (not including our ocean areas and territories). The U.S. infrastructure alone would required a ridiculous amount of investment. And the UAS industry (hobby and non-hobby) would likely bear the brunt of that cost. Some states are already looking at that cost share (TX). Being required to bear that cost is also not an option for any of us.

You're correct in that it's very likely that networked RID will be in the extended BVLOS means of compliance. Most of the areas that would be required that already have infrastructure networked RID and piggyback off of. But it is incredibly unlikely (I'd even go as far as saying it won't happen) that networked RID will be part of standard, local BVLOS, or any non-extended operation, whether commercial or recreational.

And as far as giving the general public the ability to have our information, if that's required, compliance will be horrid. And w/o universal compliance, RID will be a monumental failure. The FAA knows this and they won't require networked RID for standard and even local BVLOS operations. It would be absolutely pointless to require it.

Also, a point of clarification on FRIAs. Since RID is tied to registration, you can fly <250g drones outside of a FRIA w/o RID. This will be nice for those who have bought a DJI Mini series, or the new Autel Nano. No recreational RID requirement.
