Hi all,
First, intro's suck for me, too much info or not enough? lol. I've been here in search of multiple topics from the Mavic Air to FAA PT 107 tests and I can say your one of the most friendly informative groups I've had the pleasure of finding, so I joined :).
I'm a diesel mechanic by trade, just getting into drones over the last year. I learned to fly with the F100 Ghost w/ no GPS or altitude hold. It taught me a lot. I purchased the Mavic Air about 3 months ago and love everything but the bat time of course. I passed my 107 w/ an 88% last week (anyone looking into getting it I can help with the unknowns) and plan to use it occasionally for "for sale by owner" types for now then hopefully working into the Phantom w/ thermal imaging later (way later). As for the Mavic itself, I'm using it every chance I get to teach myself settings, the best use of the Polar Pro filters, color grading, steady video capture without cinematic mode, etc... I love this drone. I've attached a photo of the Haw river **** in Pittsboro NC, I was a few feet below 400 when it was taken.
That's about it. Any questions feel free to ask. I have the opposite of a normal schedule (nights & weekends) so you'll probably wake up to my reply.
P.S. Don't forget to call your Mom, its Mothers day!!
P.S.S. Wasnt sure whether to create a thumbnail or full image. Please let me know the preferred method. Thanks.Haw river 2 (2).jpg

Hello DieselXL, welcome to the forum.

I do have a question and feel free to PM me with your reply if necessary. My question; what segment of the Part 107 did you apply for. For example, I requested a waiver of a few restrictions and was shot down on all accounts. I have a private pilots license but that didn't get me anywhere. I asked if I need to take some classes but no response from the FAA so I just lost interest.

Thanks, man. I'm not familiar with Orange grove rd but can tell you its 30 minutes from me according to God... I mean Google (my mistake). As far as Eno, I don't know where the good spots are but look forward to finding them. I work for a company that moves all the visitors in and out of the Eno festival every July 4th weekend and have wanted to explore it even before the Air.
I'm not from here, I was born and raised near Savannah Ga, joined the U.S.C.G. and disappeared for 10 years, got out, stayed around Savannah for a few years then moved up here. ****, I wish I had the Air in the Guard. I guess I said all that to get to this, I love the outdoors and especially water and the Eno would be a great place to shoot. I get the idea you may know a few places for me to start :). The Haw river dam is my practice spot being only a little over 10 minutes from the house. If you live around here, say, near the before mentioned location, a collaboration on the Eno would be cool. Feel free to PM or send an email to [email protected]. Replying here is fine too.I'm not a "joiner" so to speak, this being the first forum I've actually posted too so I'm not quite sure of the etiquette just yet (I'll read the rules of course). Any advice you have on anything involved would be appreciated. Thanks for the warm welcome, its good to meet you.

Hi, short version "small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) ). Basically, If I understand you correctly you hold a private pilots license and have attempted to get a waiver for your drone flights, right? Look at this from the FAA/Government perspective (bureaucracy more to the point). As a manned aircraft pilot, they can't hold you accountable or do they know you can fly a drone safely without the UAS license i.e. rules and regulations, maximum flight height, speed, the right of way (same for manned aircraft) etc.. You have to take the test. It's $150. As a private pilot, you can skip the $250 study courses offered to us noobies and go straight to the FAA's 87-page study guide ( look up "faa UAS study guide" it will be the first choice in Google) and commit to memory the rules and regulations i.e. ages of eligibility/remote pilot, PIC, registrations between countries (on the test) hight limits, line of sight, I.M.S.A.F.E., crew management... basically anything you don't recognise from your previous tests. but being a pilot, if you remember to study half of what I said you'll have no problems. The rest of the test is what you already know, weather, load factor, classes of airspace etc.. you'll see in the FAA's study guide. Passing score is 70%. I knew nothing, studied after 13 hr days @ 3 am... restudied after more 13 hr days @ 3 am and made an 88%. you've got it in the bag from the start. I will say, know your chart work/ height requirements/airspace, you'll fail if you don't. i.e. lighted towers 5 mls SW of Minot airport. What class airspace are you in/how high are you allowed to fly? if your 400 feet from a structure you're allowed to fly 400 feet above it, so, if the structure is 1,300 feet what is the maximum height you're allowed to fly? And do you need ATC clearance to do so?
The question was made up but what you'll find on the test in sections. You're a private pilot, you have your **** together but don't underestimate this test, it's tricky.

I hope this helps, good luck!!

P.S. Let me know how it goes.
