As it's quite limiting only flying over parks, I'm going to apply for CAR 102 certification with CAA.
I haven't found out the price yet, so bracing myself for that.

Anyway, has any individual on here achieved CAR 102 certification? It's fairly involved as it covers all sorts of commercial operations using large drones but I'm hoping a geezer like me with a sub-250g drone will be approved without too much fuss.

Any feedback from folk who have applied?

TIA, Simon.

Hey Simon,

Best of luck with your CAR 102 application! You're right—it is quite an involved process, especially when you're looking to expand beyond hobbyist flying. But with a sub-250g drone and clear intent, hopefully the CAA sees it as a straightforward case.

We’ve spoken to a few folks in the community here at Bright Cars (we mostly handle top car PPF coating in Noida, but have some overlap with drone operators for auto shoots), and a few have gone down the CAR 102 route. From what we've heard, the documentation and demonstrating safety procedures are the main hurdles—but totally manageable with a bit of prep.

If you're using your drone for automotive content, especially commercial work like showcasing PPF coating in Noida, it’s definitely worth getting certified so you're fully compliant and can fly with peace of mind.

Would love to hear how it goes for you—keep us posted!
