No need for NAV Canada authorization for EVERY flight

In Canada, you need a Pilot certificate to fly 250g - 25kg drone plus registration of those drones, and you must apply for NAV Canada authorization by filling out a ton of paperwork (include site review) for EVERY flight. This mini avoids all that. I'm thinking of using it for dry runs to gather site information without having to go through the authorization process until the actual shoot. Big time saver. Thoughts?

I've recently retired, so not using my MPP at all these days- insurance and Standing SFOC expired. Looove flying and video content creation, but the red tape was exhausting and exhausting over the 6 years or so of DJI product ownership and use.

If I can sell my MPP I'll keep reading user feedback and issues as they arise for the Mini and consider getting one. I don't need 4k anymore, and would be thrilled to get back into taking setting that small with me hiking/biking/paddling/sailing to see new perspectives on this amazing Vancouver Island I'm lucky to call home.

More research needed!

I have Epson Moverio glasses and hope compatibility with the Mini will be possible- still having trouble finding out about the Mini's flight software. I hear it's not using Go 4?

I have M2P and Spark. I'm selling the Spark because 50 grams puts it into the totalitarian regime that demands 1) Where are you going to use it? 2) How high? 3) Why are you flying 4) Did you do a site survey? (Have the survey with you, along with the Authorization #, Pilot certificate, drone registration certificate) Then wait for a decision. Tough to run a business with a socialist government who wants to control every aspect of your life. The Mavic Mini is most welcome!
You're right, doesn't use G4 and is pretty basic but it will save me a lot of time and help plan the Mavic 2 Pro flights. Greetings from Toronto!

Class G airspace doesn’t require NAV Canada authorization. Most of Canada’s airspace is considered Class G.

For me it’s a none issue. In one rare occurrence I was required to fly in a different Class, and I used a drone that was under 250g. I didn’t bother going through authorizations, etc. It might be useful for those who oddly enough are flying constantly in a different class other than G.

However, I can see regulations of 250g dropping even lower after mavic mini gets traction. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Bob,
Indeed, Canada is a vast chunk of land. However, the vast majority (less than 1 in 5) of people live in rural areas. I'm in Toronto and the VFR map attached is my reality. We need NAV Canada authorization EVERY time we want to lift-off. I love the idea of the Mavic Mini! My clients would never accept the video quality but it helps to know what you're getting into beforehand or to just scout out an area. I know that I am persnickety and may even be described as a curmudgeon but I think we're overregulated. My two cents as well. What area do you usually fly in?20191101_142700.jpg

If I was living in the core of Toronto or had work requiring UAV in Toronto, I think I would cry. That yellow area around the core of Toronto is insane.

I usually fly in the Muskoka region and here and there where I reside in Oakville.
