So I’m a rookie to the drone world and recently received a Mavic mini for my birthday. I’ve been testing out my range limitations not only in my neighborhood but also in wide open spaces but I’m not able to get the range I expected even without adjusting any settings. I have been losing Signal around 80 meters altitude. How do I get better range and signal with out booster?

Check on your antenna orientation.
If your using Apple IOS, the DJI Fly app defaults to a manual channel selection, change this to auto after start up to let the app find the best transmission channel with the least interference

Might I suggest that as a "rookie" you should experiment with controlling the drone and investigating how it behaves during various situations, notably RTH's, BEFORE you go experimenting with range or height.
RTH behaviours have caught me out several times and unexpected behaviour can lead to "OH sugar" reactions and confused thinking.

And here is the old man again with his view on the range of the drone:

The range is, in most countries at least, so or so limited to you eyes. Condition is to fly VLOS (VISUAL Line of SIGHT) and so the range is limited by how good your eyes are. And there are several good reasons for this rule, one of them is, that it is not possible to really control the drone efficiently if you cannot see it - and believe me or not, I know what I am talking about.

For a beginner, like someone mentioned before, it is much more important (and probably saving money) if you start with all different kind of excercises on short distance. Fly forward, backwards, up to an object and pulling the drone up as you approach, the same flying backwards. Make smooth left and right turns, try to fly around an object without using the software etc. See what happens when you simply turn off the controller (if you dare) and so on.

I know, it is difficult, but even a mini is (for most people) not a thing you just simply use and if it crashes, you pick the next one. It took me with my MA about twenty flights until I felt confident enough to try to fly to the point where I hardly was able to see the drone and then press RTH to see what would happen. Maybe you are more courageous, which is okay, but remember, every thing you do as a pilot reflects to all the other dronies, one stupid thing done by a single person can cause many other to suffer under new restrictions.

Flying a drone means having responsibility.

Olav is right about VLOS.

Having said that, here are a couple of thoughts. Have you kept your antennas pointed in the direction of the drone? That can make a difference. Have you tried flying in a different location? Are you using the prop guards? They'll put your drone into Payload Mode and severely limit range.

If you only can go 80 meters straight up before loosing connection then something is wrong with your Mini.
By the way: I would say that the most important thing to learn as a newbie is hand takeoff and landing. If you master that to the full your drone will be happier as there will be a lot less wear and tear on it.

Welcome to the forum from the deserts of Arizona! Enjoy.
Learn to fly your drone with practice until controls are second nature.
The antenna on the controller of your mini are in the foldable arms. Unfold them even if you don’t use another device. These antennae should be pointing perpendicular to the antenna on the drone for max signal and you should always be generally facing the drone with your body,
Also recommend going to the DJI website for your drone and downloading the full manual... what’s in the box is just enough to get in trouble.
