Newbie in the drone world. Is it necessary to register my new DJI Magic Air with the FAA even though it’s for recreation use only?

Yes, you must register under "Section 336" here.

You are not necessarily registering you drone but more your self. You can use the number you receive on all of your drones that you fly for fun. It just makes it easier for them to identify and locate you in the event your drone is recovered.

The above is my opinion and worth every penny you paid for it!

Along those lines, I sent my Mavic in for warranty repair. It was just returned today, and the serial number in the battery compartment was different. The whole drone looks like it is brand new, complete with factory stickers everywhere. The controller looks sparkling new also. I suspect they just did a swap for a new or refurbished unit.
Anyway, you're saying I do not need to register this unit fresh, that my prior reg. will suffice? I'll double check the link and try and decide I guess.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding where hobby flying is concerned you can place you "FAA" number on as many AC as you want. If you buy an AC at a yard sale, as long as you put your number on it in a fashion where it can be accessed without the use of tools you are good to go. That means it can be placed underneath the battery in the battery compartment where it is not visible in flight. I have mixed feelings about this rule.

Yes you just need to register once if you are a hobbist and you use the same number for all your aircraft. IF you do decide later to get your 107 though, you need to register every different aircraft, so if it had been registered under 107 and then you got a replacement you would have to go and register that one as well. Hobby = Registration follows Person Commercial 107 = Registration follows Aircraft.

Add your address, phone number and some sort of request for the finder to call you for a very nice reward. Might get it back should it decide to hide from you some day.

Yes, I would recommend putting phone number and reg number on the outside of your drone, but if you want extra security, consider adding folders with that info inside your Micro SD
