Remove wire from controller ?

I am using a USB lead connected to my phone that plugs into the USB socket at the bottom of the controller. This means that the wire supplied that goes into the little slider is redundant. Is seems to be locked into the slider but is it possible to remove it completely?

It'll pull out if you yank on it. You can also pop the slider out too. I did that so I could easily slide a cable through the remote controller arm.
