I see with the new fly software RTH can now be set to return, hover or land, these seem like good additions but has got me thinking.

Choosing land whilst initially was appealing seems to risky, might be over trees or water or buildings so after landing it might not be possible to get it.

So, what about hover, again initially sounds great, I.e. stop until you get a signal and in theory you could walk towards your drone to help, but, what if the signal doesn’t reconnect and it stays without a connection? Will it just hover until the battery is so low it starts to land? Again, what if that is still over a building, water etc..

Can it perhaps be set to hover for x period of time then change to say RTH ?

I’m just concerned about loosing connection during flight as I did have some problems early on that has worried me for the future......

it really depends where you are flying at the time if you are below trees in woodland you dont want it to rise up and RTH ,so just having it hover would be fine
unless there are reasons for it doing a normal RTH which is the default setting, then there is no issue of course all this presupposes that the drone is in VLOS ,and in close up work then the issue would not arise

That's how I crashed yesterday i was flying in between trees 30m between them i was halfway between and aboit 60feet, tried out rth it rose to above the trees and started dropping instead of coming back to home then down which caused imu prob send for repair etc but a thump on front sort all of the problems but why not fly above home then come down ?

You are talking about options for the Loss of Signal action.
For most flyers, most of the time, the default action (RTH) is the only one that is appropriate.
The other two options are only for use in specialised situations.

The drone is programmed to come home without descending until it is above the home point.
If you post your flight data that might explain what happened during your incident.
Ats what i expected to happen but it was still 15m from homeabove trees then stopped and descended being new and 1st fliggt i panicked and tried to pull back but too late it was. In the tree iv no idea how to send data or look at it ill try do that and forward it to you if thats ok, much appreciated

This is another good example of the responsibilities the Pilot in Command assumes when they take off. There are no universally correct answers. It is entirely up to the judgement of the pilot.

hover and wind could blow it away

I just wish they could’ve added, return to remote (not home). Like the other ones have.

My mm is my first drone only got less than an hr flying time, does this have to be done on a laptop? If so what app will i need i dont have a laptop but can borrow one or ipad

You only need Wi-Fi to update the DJI fly app. That is where the new RTH options are listed. Download the new update to your device.

Descending is what it will do if RTH is triggered when it is less than 20m away. See page 13 of the manual:

Code:
4. a. If the aircraft is further than 20m from the Home Point when the RTH procedure begins, it ascends to the preset RTH altitude and flies to the Home Point at a speed of 8 m/s. If the current altitude is higher than the RTH altitude the aircraft flies to the Home Point at the current altitude.

  b. if the aircraft id less than 20m from the Home Point when the RTH procedure begins it lands immediately.

I guess this is one of those things that if you're flying in areas with obstructions such as trees you need to be aware of what it'll do in the default RTH mode - no doubt why the option for 'just hover' was added. For most flights it'll be in unobstructed open air due to the requirement to be VLOS in most countries, so the defaults work well in general.
