I have done some searching but can't seem to get a definitive answer to the question: are the side sensors activated during Point of Interest, Waypoints and Activate Track?

Thanks in advance.

Never mind, as soon as I posted this and did another search, I found the answer. They are activated in the modes mentioned in OP.

yep!
just sucks they aren't active in all flight modes.

They are also active in Tripod mode

They are also active in Tripod mode
So when I am flying the slowest possible, with the most time to see an obstacle and avoid it, the sensors are active.... hmmmm

The side sensor is quite useless IMHO. Being not a 3D camera, it can only detect obstacles that are very close to the drone and it takes time to do so. I doubt very much if the drone can brake in time to avoid collision.
