Sony drones?

Just following your lead.

You showed me a graphic for Sony shares, I showed you a graphic for DJI shares.

I wasn't saying it was exciting, per se, I was just stating fact, on a thread that is Sony related.

The fact a product has a Sony sensor has no relevance to Sony's aspirations in the drone market since Sony's dominance in the sensor market means it's likely many different products across the market will use a Sony sensor.

The fact that Sony is making a drone has relevance to Mavic Pilots how?.....

I mean, we could go back and forth all day, I was just chiming in with some info that hadn't been mentioned... Would you like me to start a new thread?

This is the general discussion section of a drone forum and contains non-Mavic specific discussions. By posting about a Sony sensor in a submersible drone on a thread about possible Sony air drones it implies it has relevance when it doesn't which as Meta4 correctly pointed out, Sony sensors are used in a very wide range of products.

If you want to start a discussion on submersible drones that's your choice although bear in mind it's micro 4/3, not micro 2/3.

To reply to the question of "why is this pertainent on a DJI related forum", the answer, while not direct should be obvious though tangential. Competition in the marketplace, especially from a non-Chinese company will keep DJI honest and improving. So with that, we can see how Sony might push DJI to be even better and that makes it relevant for discussion here.

Right now there is really no serious competition for serious drone pilots. Autel and Skydio are doing their best to break into the market, but they don't have the capital or resources of a Sony.

Be interesting to see what Sony can do. GoPro tried, didn't turn out so good. Though I see they still have some on the market.

That means 70% of the drone buying public can expect to get shafted by the Chinese.... they don't have a business model like Europeans or Japanese do, to make something properly that will last. They want things to break or have a limited life so that you have to buy another one... a motorcycle that lasts 5 years then needs replacing because it has dissolved in the rain is better for business than one that lasts 40 years with hardly any spares requirements (my BMW)... that is there modus operandi. When it is working my DJI Air is very clever, the marriage of technologies, but the Chinese did not develop those technologies, they have spotted how they can be utilised though. I hope my Air does last because it fits my bag and provides pretty good image quality for a compact camera.

My next choice will be quality dependent, if DJI prove to be reliable for many years (already we are seeing IMU failures and the Air is only 3 years old - YES, ONLY) I don't consider 3 years to be old, my mobile phone that I use daily is at least 15 years old and still on the original battery and it makes phone calls far better than colleagues with their fancy yuppie phones that are forever struggling for signal. If the 1" sensor drone proves to be reliable, that will do for me, I shall then be judging on longevity of life and I believe Sony build high quality that lasts. If DJI match that, then I shall be happy to buy another one of theirs, but I have my doubts.
3 years IS old when it comes to technology. I hope Sony targets the pro-sumer market as well and brings competition to DJI. DJI does a lot of things right but a lot of things wrong as well.

A Sony drone in a Mavic forum? PERISH THE THOUGHT!

I imagine a Sony drone would be well engineered and nice equipment.

You use a phone that's 15yrs old? Really? That's a 2G phone. In the US the 2G towers are being dismantled. How can that work with a DJI drone since it has no display? Do you own a DJI drone yet?

If you understand the history of Sony cameras, they bought Minolta, which produced the finest, and most under-rated Japanese cameras on the market. The then took their technology and married it with Minolta cameras and optics and from there developed the mirrorless cameras which set the stage for everyone else. But Sony tends to do strange things in the marketplace, like requiring proprietary accessories, peripherals and equipment (much like Apple) but seem to lack any follow through or large following. Sony never developed a cult-like following like Apple. But from an image standpoint with digital cameras... IMO they are the ones to beat for image quality (I've got Canon gear).
I’m well aware of Sony’s history with cameras. I’ve had a few Minoltas too. I think Sony is doing very well in the premium camera market - many pros are shooting them over Canon/Nikon and I predict their market share will increase - particularly with the problems Canon has had with the R5. My only point is that, at least until the latest video-focused version of the a7, their menu system has been awful, as is their management software.

I don't use a phone for flying my Air, I use an 8" tablet because I need the bigger screen to be able to see the info on it. Everything has been taken off it other than DJI, because I only use it as a screen for flying, no editing, no storing of pictures, just as a viewing screen. It fits the arms on the transmitter. My phone has buttons and no camera, it is a Nokia 3100.

Anyone interested/excited/curious about this - Sony Japan / Airpeak If they could repeat the success of their A7 line of cameras, this would bring welcome competition to the DJI's (almost) monopoly.
Cannot get really excited about it, just by watching this animated video of a prop spinning up. Just Saying...

As meta4 has mentioned GoPro have long since left the market and only released the Karma drone which was a huge failure. Even putting aside the disastrous launch it was no match for the Mavic (I say that as someone who initially wanted the Karma) which wasn't entirely unexpected given it was Gopro's first drone going against a drone that was the result of several generations of previous drone.

Sony of course face a more difficult challenge now as DJI have further refined and improved their range, it's similar reasons for Sony's success with the A7/A9 cameras. They went aggressively into the mirrorless market and abandoned their DSLRs (or DSLT's as they were at the time) and were first into the full frame mirrorless market while Canon and Nikon instead were more cautious and wanted to protect their DSLRs. By the time Canon and Nikon decided to enter the FF mirrorless market, Sony were into the third generation of their A7 series and now offering general, high resolution, video and sports versions. The camera market is a bit different because it's not just the camera but the ecosystem as well but Sony have clearly done well getting in first.

As much as I like Sony (their A9 series is just incredible) I can't say I'm getting excited at the moment about a potential drone even if it's a consumer model which seems less likely. I do also feel it's a shame GoPro mucked up their drone so badly as I think we're approaching a point where an 'action' type drone would be viable and something I'd definitely like to add alongside my Mavic 2.
