Study indicates most drones are flying illegal.

Really? Hardly a surprise. It took me only 2 seconds to find this video from The Netherlands posted just the other month...

Why people do this is beyond me...

My thought would be that if DJI products had hard limits of 400 foot altitude and 1000 foot distance, their unit sales would be far less than what currently exists. With the technology that is available today, the parameter limits that many abide by will be just another challenge to overcome by many others.

That may be that the authorities don’t view it as a problem at this time.
That may change.

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest and even here the range threads where people compete to get the longest possible distances completely breaking the VLOS rules in many of the countries they're submitted from are extremely popular.

Hence why I can't blame DJI when they implement any restrictions in the drones to enforce the rules, I blame the people who flagrantly violate the laws that lead to such enforcements. Even as someone that is very careful to fly within the rules that concerns me because potentially tighter restrictions could mean more difficulties in flying legally if there's more hoops to jump through.

Just imagine what it might be like if the (proposed) 400' rule goes into effect. That's 400 feet for both altitude AND distance!
