Using a Drone to Spy on People!

Look up California Civil Code section 1708.8. This was recently enacted as a result of a similar event taking place.

Well if you're looking for input, I think you should mind your own business. The story sounds like complete BS. Eye level my a$$! I'd be the one that was pissed if you came knocking at my door lecturing me.
Agreed. Story sounds made up by the hot tub guy. Why do I want to look at a guy and his wife soaking in a spa?? Good god man, there's an internet if you're hornet and you can be back to business in 10 min these days. I doubt someone spent $1000+ just to be able to search out some dumbed down version (at a lake community!) of what is everywhere online basically for free.
This guy probably saw a drone flying around legally and doesn't want it around so he's making up this exaggeration.

Is the guy's wife hot? Like super internet hot? Because if she's fat or old, he's lying for sure.

Reckon your neighbour must be a bit slow for allowing the drone to watch him for 8 to 10 minutes. Most people would bash it with the yard brush, find the owner and stick where the sun don't shine..

I didn't realize that this would be somewhat of a polarizing issue. You'd think we were discussing left wing versus right wing politics. There is not a doubt in my mind that my friend's information is reliable. The fact that my post even brings comments about the wife's hotness or comparisons of Internet porn and the relative value of drone footage as "stroke material" (hope that's not too graphic a description for on here), in my mind, that says a lot--make of that what you will... I mean GEEZ. I was just pointing out that I'm sure there are lots of people who don't know the first thing, nor do they care, about the rules of UAV flight and that there ARE issues of inherent privacy. I did not want to, or intend, to drag things down into the gutter. I think this is an important issue... obviously, others don't.

The important issue in this case is putting forth questionable stories as a justification for further restrictions. I went back and re-read your description again....... i'm sorry, but it's very implausible. A strictly FPV flight as you described, at night and over the distances you described is just not gonna happen. Sorry

unfortunately, with open forums such as this, you will get the "full spectrum" of responses and opinions. You just have to weed thru the fodder to get what you are looking for. I agree that malicious spying is wrong and is most likely a crime if proven that this was taking place. However, i also agree that I would have taken matters into my own hands well before i let it sit there for 8-10 minutes staring right at me.....If possible, I would have grounded it and kept it until I got a knock on my door and dealt with the individual accordingly. If they wanted to be confrontational about it, I would then involve the police and see if the individuals attitude changed. Bottom line is you have rights and the ability to protect your privacy. I don't think to many judges would would not see this as a violation of your privacy based on the description of what you say transpired.

The scenario is totally plausible depending on the drone in use....well within the range of a Mavic or possibly even a Phantom...

Interesting conversation. I have two daughters and am very particular about who in our neighborhood is taking pictures of them. I live in a townhouse community and we all know each other pretty well. My direct neighbors know I have a couple drones and the kids love when I fly cause they love to see it. But this is all in day light and I make sure not to actually capture them on camera...they mostly want to see how fast it goes.

So in PA we have a right to defend thing. You come in my house and are a threat to the family, I can legally shoot you. There has been cases of drunk people going in the wrong house after a night of drinking and getting shot. So shooting down a drone during night would probably not bother too many people around here. But if the drone was low, I would have sprayed it with water if possible since that would ruin it. Otherwise, I'd try to sneak behind it and knock it out of the sky with a broom or another object, making sure I'm sneaking up from behind so I'm not on camera. That way you can claim the drone just malfunctioned and fell.

For the sake of sanity, I will let this rest and this will be my last response... And I rest my case regarding the disparity of opinions.

Now you're just twisting what was said and making up crap to make it seem implausible and disparage. At first, there was doubt about the flight level and how it could be level to the the height of the Jacuzzi, so I showed a picture of how tall the Jacuzzi is. Now you're saying "A strictly FPV flight as you described, at night and over the distances you described...".... I didn't describe any distances. In fact, it is a very short distance from the house where the drone was suspect to be from to my friend's spa.. so here's a picture of that. Also, the house across from the one with the spa is quite a bit higher up, at least 30-50 feet so there was a clear line of sight across a distance of 745'... I measured it with Google Maps... I don't see much that's implausible for that.

Go ahead and have the last word if you feel you must. But WHY DON'T WE JUST LET THIS REST... It happened, believe it or not, sure, it might have been four minutes or even less, though I doubt that, and opinions are obviously all over the place.

The OP said it was across a small cove. So I assume worst case is 3/4 of a mile...well within the range of many of todays drones.
Of course it's within range!....... I'm referring to the flight plan as you described. At night..... close quarters maneuvering..... obstacle advoidance etc etc etc......., I'm saying it's implausible. And frankly, you weren't there so you're JUST taking your neighbors word for it.

haha.....i guess we can agree to disagree.....curious how you would react if this had happened to you instead.

Are you asking me? I'll tell you exactly how I'd respond...... I'd knock the crap out of it! Here in the US at least, my property or "airspace" if you will starts below the roofline. If somebody brings his quad below that, it's mine! Just like if he landed it on my lawn. It's that simple! If he's hovering above my house, I wouldn't like it but there's nothing I can do. He has just as much right to that space as I do. That's just the way it is it guys

First, I never met an anesthesiologist I didn't like or who stuck me (pun intended) as as someone weird enough to create a story that he shared with LT. For me, this is sorta like the time someone was driving 50 mph or more in my neighborhood (a well-populated tract of land in north Dallas). I went to his house and made it clear this was never to happen again. It never did. Were it me in the tub and it was clear who owned the drone, I've leave a crushed drone shell gift wrapped in his/her drive way with a love note. Bottom line: next time I go out for a late-nite soak, my BB Red Ryder will be next to my towel, just in case.

I said my last comment was my last reply, but this one isn't about the thread. Your comment "I never met an anesthesiologist I didn't like" ... I never thought about it until now, but I know three of them very well. All three (and their wives) are extremely nice. Maybe there's something about "passing gas" that makes you a better person? Or maybe it's the release of all the pressure!

That kind of talk gives me flashbacks (and mildish hallucinations) to the late 60's. But that's ALL I'll say about THAT! ;) Now, some of my best friends are cops.
