Wind speed at higher elevations

For the newer drone pilots I think copy of my local wind speed chart for today will help you to realize how much the wind speed can increase with elevation.

I usually fly my MP around the 100-150’ mark and as you can see there’s gusts up to 50mph at that altitude while it only feels like a good breeze outside.

It felt like a decent day to fly until I opened up the app and it said not to fly. Without the app I wouldn’t of had a clue how windy it is just a 100’ up in the air.

A good site for winds aloft, in a nice format with temperature, direction and speed for the various altitudes, is at the link below. Popular with glider pilots for assessing mountain wave and ridge lift etc.

I use this app all the time. If UAV says it is not good to fly I usually don't. Owning a Mavic Mini I tend to pay attention to UAV. If I do fly on those days I usually go low and slow.
