Airspace confusion

Note that the part of the lake closest to the city is controlled airspace from the surface to 4400'. If drones are flying there, they may be doing it illegally (I see that a lot!), but they may also have authorization to fly in that area, which is not too hard to get.

Indeed, I saw that. And that's where I see folks flying all the time. At a marina there.

@mavicmac Ranger and JimWest . . . this is textbook how you help someone. You three Rock!!!

Carry on pilots.

Just saw the discussion get the kitty Hawk app. I live in glens falls and am inside the glens falls airport airspace. I need to get authorization to fly in my yard.
I talked to the FAA in Albany and they told me to use the kitty Hawk Ap apparently the faa has something to do with it.
I am 107 licensed as well as private pilot.
You can call the FISDO office of the faa they have a gentleman who is there drone specialists. He was very informative when I talked with him.

Interesting. I downloaded that app last night and then today my MZ wouldnn't connect anymore-linking. So I uninstalled it and it began to work again. Is there a way to use that app without flying from it? For now as a newbie I would like to use the DJI app.

If you’re close to the Burlington airport the Fixed Base operator will have sectionals if you want.
@Nautidawg Here is a link to get any FAA sectional chart you need:

The inner circle shows Class C airspace from the surface to 4400' AGL (above ground level). The outer circle shows Class C airspace from 2200' AGL to 4400' on the right and from 1500' to 4400' on the left. So you can fly under the Class C airspace in the outer circle because you don't fly higher than 400'. Note that there's also restricted airspace due east of Burlington at the outer edge of the outer circle. This gets a lot more complicated. Take a look at the FAA's guide: https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/fli...ts/aero_guide/media/editions/cug-complete.pdf
That “restricted airspace” appears to only be active if there’s a NTOM issued for it

BTV participates in LAANC so probably it’s just that they have authorization.

@Nautidawg an easier way than learning the charts is to use the Facilities Map from the FAA.

AirMap and Kittyhawk already have this integrated into their apps so that’s why I originally suggested those but if you want to know directly from the FAA where you can and can’t fly or need authorization then this is your ticket. It’s basically an aeronautical chart specifically for drones.

I am a 107 pilot so I had to learn all the charts and everything but in reality this tells you everything you actually need to know and nothing you don’t.

Hi All,
When I look at distances on a boating app and compare it to Google map and also to the DJI Go 4 app-they each tell me differently what airspaces are there. For instance, my own property is 15 miles from the nearest airport, nowhere near a stadium, heli pad, military base etc etc. But on Go 4 it says i'm located in about 5 different classes of airspace. What am I configuring wrong-something on the app? I do know that my boating app (Navionics) tells me in nm (based on gps as well) where things are-and I can honestly say in my experience from boat navigation that it is pretty darn close when judging between the paper chart and the app (locations of ATONs, obstacle to navigation etc)....as well as measuring in nautical miles and then comparing it to the App. I'm so confused trying to determine where in the future I can actually use this thing. Thanks
I use both Airmap and B4UFly. If I think I am not getting enough info so I can fly legally I would ask here at the forum and give these folks the latitude and longitude.

@brett8883,
this screenshot I just took is this the map specifically for drones you meant? Also, as I understand it, the footage denotes areas which must be asked for authorization by BTV airport tower to fly max, say, 400 ft? Outside this, I don't need to ask anyone for auth.

You need to use AirMap or KittyHawk to get LAANC authorization. LAANC is an automated system that facilitates the authorization process online through the app. Don’t call, any towers. They won’t authorize it that way and will tell you not to call back.
