OK I'm just getting started and am using the recommended DJI Fly App but I've noticed other APPs are available.
What's the general consensus on which APP is best?

Well i just lost my Air 2 with Apple Airtag and Master AirScrew Stealth props in Lake Ontario yesterday. I am furious because i was using Dronelink app on follow me mode and it decided to take a dive into the water for no reason at all I was at -11 feet when i noticed....Sank like the Titanic so buyer beware of apps. Apparently it turned off all my sensors on Cine mode ...I'm livid. Still have my Mini 2 and DJI FPV drones. But what a lost. Going to wait for a newer version of Air drone from DjI ..hope this helps

Not sure if I understand completely, I was enquiring about DJI APPs in particular.
are the APPs you are referring to third party?

Yes, that is a 3rd party app. DJI does list a number of other apps on their site but many of them are for other drones not in the recent Mavic lineup. The 2 Pro will use the Go app for example vs Fly. Air 2 or 2S will use the FL app. The others listed are for various other drones. Third party is your main other options.

How can you be sure the sensors were turned off?
How can you be sure that the app you used is to blame?
Post your flight data if you want to see what actually happened.

The sensors on any drone, (lidar, cameras or otherwise) cannot detect water. This has happened to a fair few pilots when over water, I hope it does not discourage you from the hobby. Out of curiosity why were you using the drone link app as apposed to the DJI FLY built in follow me mode?

Better apps for flying than DJI Fly? I would say in general none "better". DJI has really been working on that app, even forsaking the Go4 app that controls the Mavic 2's. However, if your drone is supported I would suggest you look into the Litchi app. I don't think that Litchi supports the MA2 yet but I could be wrong. Keep an eye out for that one. The one thing it adds that DJI Fly does not have is the ability to pre-program and virtually fly (test) your flight on your computer at home. Litchi also support FPV flight with nothing more than inexpensive virtual reality goggles. Again, check to see if you drone is supported. The program costs less than $25.

I don't think you responded to the OP's question. There are other places to vent about your loss. It's not about you.

I've found Rainbow and DH Mobile to look interesting. I'm going out flying this weekend, will let you know once I give them a try. Not sure if they're available for iOS.

Forsaken?
So far there's no indication of that.
DJI just run DJI Fly on their newer, smaller, cheaper drones.

The Air 2 is not supported by Litchi.

The VPS sensors on DJI drones, detect the surface of water quite well.

That's just a myth.
Losing VPS sensors (if that actually happened) doesn't cause a drone to descend into water.

If @MikeDo3s posts his recorded flight data, we might find out what actually happened.

It was stupid of me to use an unfamiliar app i didn't know sensors can't detect water.

Not venting my friend just advising on taking precationary measures on what apps he might want to use.
Hello it's about all of us pilots

I'm new to this and am having a hard time understanding why anyone would deviate from the manufacture's APP.
The reason for my inquiry was because when I went to the play store the DJI Fly APP wasn't available up front, instead there was DJI Go 4. DJI Go, DJI Pilot and several others had to search for the Fly App and I was just wondering what these other APPs are for.

I disagree. #MikeDo3s named an alternative app that he used and then listed his experience with that app as a cautionary tale. It sure made me think twice. Thanks #MikeDo3s

They are for other DJI drones.
DJI Fly is for DJI's minis and the Air 2 series.

The main reason that some flyers use 3rd party apps because they have other specialised features, not available in the DJI app.
