Best drone insurance for flyaway and damage? Is there a consensus on which insurance to buy?

I don't know of any companies that will provide liability insurance for amateur pilots. The coverage mentioned from State farm is drone replacement coverage only. All the companies that I have spoken with about liability coverage required the person flying be a 107 pilot.

My homeowners policy covers liability for damage done by personal property.

Personal property excludes motor vehicles and aircraft used to transport people or persons. So drones would not be excluded.

Are you sure that is true, and not just that the agent you contacted didn't want to sell it? The agents don't make any money off of it. No one else offers comparable insurance that can be used for drones. No one.
According to the State Farm website (Massachusetts Insurance Agents Near You - State Farm® Insurance):
"State Farm does not actively market new business in this state at this time."
Looks like folks in Massachusetts are in the same boat as those of us in California.

I have been using STATE FARM for the past 7 years and have had to use it twice and must say it is rock solid ,what ever price you paid for the drone is the price you get back from STATE FARM .First time Air 2s was shot down over a farm ,second time I was running from a water bird and hit a power line over water .Each time I was refunded the entire amount .I just added my new Mini 5 pro to the policy $49 bucks for the entire year .STATE FARM ROCKS
as I said earlier, I have a State Farm policy, but it has different terms. I did not insure for the cost of the drone(s). I insured for the full cost of replacement; insuring only for original purchase price seems unwise. If I lose a drone, I file a claim for the full cost of a new drone of the same model.

I even adjusted upward for the upgrades. One of the drones I insured was the Mavic 3. When DJI 'retired' the Mavic 3 as they upgraded to the Mavic 3 Pro, I changed the replacement cost to the Mavic 3 Pro + battery. I think at the time the cost of that drone + battery was around $2400.

my premium is $60/year; and that covers up to $5000 on a personal property policy. If I want to increase the coverage above $5000 the premium would jump a bit

I guess I need to update the policy, but with the current DJI mess I'm not sure what a replacement cost would be

Well, it turns out that State Farm is not taking any new customers in my state. What's the next best insurance? Allstate?
Before you even think about talking to Allstate, look up their rating on line. They have a reputation of being one of the worst companies ever to deal with. Try contacting your home or auto company.

Let’s say you file a claim with St.Farm for a Mavic 4 Pro. If someone in the St.Farm system looks up a replacement cost for said drone and discovers they aren’t available in the U.S., what’s the outcome????

When you take out insurance on a standalone State Farm policy, you provide them with a sales receipt and when you make a claim, they pay out whatever is on the bottom line of that sales receipt. Once the payout is made, the policy has been fulfilled and at the point, it will likely get cancelled.

Not actively marketing new business isn't quite the same as a categorical refusal to insure drones in CA, but the effect is the same. No new policies, but existing policies are likely still renewable.

Yes, the number I called was a central State Farm number to get you to an agent, so this was before I had the opportunity to speak with an agent. Also, someone previous in the thread also found that State Farm doesn't operate in Massachusetts.

Hi, I recently ordered a Mavic 4 Pro from an Amazon seller. Given that they give the full 30 day return policy from Amazon itself, which is restated by the vendor; they also said the unit is new and still in the factory sealed box so I finally decided to take the plunge. However, as of yet, I'm still unsure what "planet" it was originally sold in, but I need coverage that will work on USA, Earth.

However, I do want to get coverage as close to Care Refresh as possible (or better/cheaper). Is there a consensus as to which insurance is the best to get? My primary criteria for "Best" is the successful follow through on a claim, and if anyone has experience with the Mavic 4 Pro, due to its unique situation for US customers, that would be of great benefit as well.

Many thanks! Have a wonderful day!

Tom
So, as noted in this thread, State Farm doesn't operate in Massachusetts, Allstate is apparently not a good option, what are some of the other drone insurance options I have. Ideally, once again, I'd like to use an insurance company that will reliably process a claim with a refund for both crash damage, including pilot error (which shouldn't be a problem but one never knows) as well as fly aways.

I DID find one from an outfit called Cover Your Assets (CYA) for about $140/year, but that's a bit expensive but still cheap compared to losing a Mavic 4 Pro.

So, any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

According to CYA's website www.cya.insure they cover flyaways and accidental damage. Asurion does not cover flyaways.
For those of us in California, CYA might be one of the few options available. Their reviews are mixed, but given the lack of alternatives, I am very inclined to give them a try.

you've said this before and it's really not that simple

it's like saying you bought a house in 1992 for $107,000, have paid homeowners insurance since then, and the house burnt down totally in 2025 when it was worth $977,000, and you only get $107,000

now, it's true that for vehicles, a standard policy will pay-out the 'current' value of the vehicle if it's totaled. But it's also true just about anybody can add a 'new car replacement endorsement' to their auto policy. It's optional coverage that pays for full cost replacement at the latest matching make and model available. Yeah, it costs more than a standard policy but it is still an option. I have a work van and a heavy duty pickup that are covered by standard policies. But my wife's Toyota Highlander Hybrid has the replacement endorsement. IIRC it's an additional $140/year

functionally, my State Farm drone insurance is simple. I get up to $5000 of coverage for $60/year. I have listed my Mavic 3 and my Mini 3 Pro on the policy. At the time, the Mini 3 Pro was still available and hadn't been discontinued. I insured it for a replacement value of $850 for drone and battery

but the Mavic 3 had just been discontinued so I insured it for the replacement value of a Mavic 3 Pro + 1 battery. It's set at $2299 for the drone and $209 for the battery. If I file a claim today for loss of the Mav 3, that's the amount of the check I would get

however, after all the the talk in this thread and the DJI mess in the USA currently, I called my agent yesterday and explained what's going on and that replacement would be much more expensive now. He said again, that my policy would cover up to a $5000 loss and that all I would need to do is come in and change the replacement endorsement to a higher number reflecting current market. I mentioned that the most available model right now is the Mavic 4 Pro rather than the Mavic 3 Pro (other than at EBay); he said setting replacement value as the Mavic 4 Pro would be fine but the limitation would still be $5000. Unless of course I wanted to increase the limit and pay a higher premium

this is a fairly standard personal property policy. You can add items for current value or replacement. All it takes to upgrade to replacement is an endorsement provision for each item, That's common

now, as I said, I have been a loyal State Farm customer for probably more than 50 years. I don't believe I have filed a claim in 20 years. I am confident if I did file a claim the policy would not be cancelled, But if you only have this one type of policy with them, and it's new, I don't know if it would have the flexibility mine has

calling the reviews "mixed" may be a bit kind. But they are located in California so if you're a California resident maybe you'd have a little better leverage

seems like you could insure as a drone, or as an appliance

....I have been a loyal State Farm customer for probably more than 50 years. ....
If someone is not a loyal State Farm customer and have no current relationship or policies with State Farm and they walk in off the non-Cali non-Mass street and want to get coverage for just one drone, how does that work for them?

I'm not sure but a couple of posters in this thread have said they have State Farm policies without having other policies with the company

...and that policy is much different than the policy you have for your drones with State Farm, correct?
