I use sport mode a lot on my Air and so I have not wanted to use the switch for ATTI mode. The more I have read though the more I want to learn to fly in ATTI in case of a problem. My M2P will arrive Friday and I will learn to fly in ATTI on my air. I am looking forward to flying this way and wonder if there are any suggestions or things to worry about early on?

Pick a wide open space with no buildings or trees to start your quest.
I have an area about 200 yards by 200 yards nearby that I can use though I am thinking of the crowded small park down the road for my first try :-)

Care to explain?

Sure. I thought that this was well enough known by now but, if you aren't aware, it's just a simple parameter change using DJI Assistant 2 to map ATTI mode onto the flight mode switch in place of tripod or sport mode. It's useful both for practicing ATTI flight and to be able to abortnfrom P-GPS to ATTI if the aircraft suffers yaw errors and doesn't switch itself early enough.

Mavic 2 Atti mode

I knew that for Mavic Pro, didnt know that also works with Mavic 2....but im not incorrect without that "hack" there is no ATTI switch :)

It's not a simple preference setting but I'm not sure I'd describe it as a hack - it's a parameter change using the supplied DJI software.

If you want to learn to fly in ATTI mode, buy a $30 drone off Amazon and practice with it. Controls are identical to DJI's and many of them are small enough to fly indoors. I trained myself on these a long time ago so that there was no chance of a $2000 mistake and now find ATTI mode is second nature. YMMV but that is what I would recommend.

Thanks and I considered that. My Dog would go nuts if I flew indoors. I have the Air and I am somewhat coordinated so I am going this route. I have a huge field nearby that will make it easier - can it be that hard? I want to be able to survive with my M2P if it has to go ATTI for any reason. Also once I make the change to the Air won't I be able to flip the switch out of Sport Mode to go back to GPS? I have not found a lot about this adventure in the archives.

That's arguably wise advice - even more so if we were talking about manual mode. These are pretty easy to fly in ATTI though, especially with the safety of P-GPS just a flick of the switch away.

It's pretty straightforward. Start, preferably on a calm day, by simply applying forward elevator and then releasing. The aircraft will continue to coast and you can figure out how much rear elevator is needed to stop it. It's a bit like driving on ice.

You've got the bug, and ATTI is never going to scratch your itch. Join me @JDawg , come to the dark side and get into FPV!!!

That's kind of how I imagined it. Like driving on a slick track, pretend like there is an egg between your foot and the accelerator, and no sudden movements. Looking forward to this.
